Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 99 996 C4 with the 3.4 engine, and a spare set of later type silencers of an 03 car (the ones with the integral flexure) and although they give a more sporty note than the original silencers, I want to go further still and get the full PSE gutteral sound. There is a Mk 1 mod to these silencers which involves a bypass between the inlet and outlet pipes (as offered by Oettle Autodienst on Ebay) and also a later type mod, where the bypass taps into the internal pipework via the stub on the top of the box and links with the outlet. My question is, what is the difference in sound? It would seem logical to do the Mk1 mod as this bypasses all the silencer internal, as opposesd to the Mk2 which seems a halfway house. Is the Mk2 mod quieter than the Mk1? Any advice greatfully received Bill

POST 2Original post

There's only one way to know - try it out on your spare boxes! I reckon the Mk1 mod will be louder, bypassing the box, but I think the bypass link is quite narrow so only some gas goes that way? Gert does 996 RSRs now I think, so is an alternative?

POST 3Original post

It's outstanding. Plenty loud and throaty enough, without being annoying. You won't be disappointed. You're basically getting the original (non-switchable) PSE. Had my C4 Cab done a few months ago by my specialist. Careful if you do track days though, may be a bit much.

POST 4Original post

There used to be a regular on here who has now started his own forum who had these on a 996 4S. I have heard them in the flesh, as it were and they do sound much better that the standard silencers. By all accounts, they did not affect the performance so they probably count as a "low cost, high smiles" mod. If you go for them, make sure you tell your insurance company because you would not want to give them an excuse not to pay out in the event of a claim.

POST 5Original post

I've had these on my cab for the last couple of years and absolutely love em. Wouldn't be able to go back to the stock 996 sound again.

Anyone know what the db's are on the RSR's !! I fancy a little noise from my GT3 !!
