Does it damage the motor to start in second gear from a stop sign?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I assume you have a 6-speed manual? If you do then starting in 2nd gear will put additional wear on the clutch since you'll need more revs and time with the clutch slipping to get the car moving. The engine won't care unless you're really bogging it down to the point of almost stalling. A Tiptronic or PDK will normally (correct me if I'm wrong) start in 2nd gear unless you really floor it.
Nope. My 2009 C2 PDK always starts in first from a dead stop. Doesn't stay there very long, but it is in first.
Yeah, my PDK starts in 1st from a dead stop, but sometimes on a rolling stop it will still be in 2nd. Since the PDK clutches (yeah, there are 2) are lubricated, this is not a real wear issue. I heard that the Tiptronic starts in 2nd unless you're in manual mode.
The older Tiptronic will start in 2nd gear, while the PDK will start in first.
What Pistol Pete said. Starting in 2nd (from a dead stop) in a manual will increase clutch wear.
