Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Went to move the car in to the garage for winter earlier this week and it's dead. It has sat for just over a month with a battery trickle charger on it only occasionally. When I went to move it I stuck the key in the ignition, turned it to position 1, dash came alive as normal, made all the normal sounds and read the oil level. Turned it to crank it and it went completely dead. The charger was off the battery when I tried this and I'm pretty sure the battery is goosed. However, with the charger hooked up the car is still completely dead. No window drop when I open the door, no interior lights, nothing. Anyone had or heard of this issue before?

POST 2Original post

I'd go with battery first and foremost. When mine sat for a year (because I was both quasi-disabled and entirely locked out of it, lol) upon gaining entry again the battery was so knackered that nothing would work even after hours of charging. It just wouldn't. If you've got a spare battery hook it up in parallel with some jump leads to prove the point. Or even better, if you haven't got a jump starter pack yet - get one - they're well worth it. Quite literally weird science.

POST 3Original post

If a battery is totally dead a trickle charger doesn't have any effect as they need to see reasonable battery volts to work. As above connect a good battery in parallel or a jump pack.

POST 4Original post

I'm pretty sure your battery has gone flat :- ( Usually the alarm and horn goes off as a warning though.

POST 5Original post

Have you tried jump starting from a booster battery or another vehicle? The trickle charger won't deliver enough power to start your car.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not yet, waiting on the temperature going up a bit at the weekend before I go out and start mucking around with tools. I would have thought with the trickle charger attached to the battery I would at least get the window drop and interior lights coming on when I opened the door.

POST 7Original post

Mine did the same as this despite sitting on an optimate charger 24/7 last winter that indicated a full charge. Keys in dash lights OK, turn to crank then nothing. You may get it going with a jump pack but battery will be goosed. Time to get the card out and buy a new one I'm afraid

POST 8Original post

With a Ctek on supply mode and yes you would , a trickle charger wont work if a battery is totally flat , it won't output Any voltage .. even if not a very low charged battery a battery is a bucket for water to flow into .. as such the " water " won't flow out to other items .
