Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

OK I've found some 5 speed gearbox pics but I still can't find any 6 speed gearbox pics yet but I'm still trying So which manufacturer do you think this 5 speed is made by?

POST 2Original post

I'd say it's made by Getrag, just like the 6 speed. If fact, I am pretty sure that's the case.

POST 3Original post

I seem to recall reading that the 5 speed box is sourced from Volkswagen. JH

POST 4Original post

Incidentally....a read of the manual shows that the 6-speed's gear ratios for 1st and 2nd are DIFFERENT when in the 2.7 versus the 3.4, which I find interesting. (3.67 and 2.05 for the 2.7, but 3.31 and 1.95 for the 3.4) 3rd through 6th are the same. Also, the final drive ratio of .82:1 for 6th gear isn't that much taller than the .84 in the 5-speed. I liked the 5 speed in my 2.7, by the way.

POST 6Original post

So what do these ratios signify? Also what's a 'good' or 'bad' gear ratio...

POST 7Original post

There are not many companies out there manufacturing transmissions. I say Getrag or ZF. A real dark horse would be the people in California "Butfoy" that make gear boxes for lambos, Vectors and others based on the old series SD-2 ZF.

POST 8Original post

golfguy: From the gear ratios reported above, the 2.7 Cayman has "lower" ratios (higher number = lower ratio) for the first two gears, giving it more grunt (applied torque) in those gears. This may be partly why some who've driven both back-to-back reported being surprised that the 2.7 was so quick up to 60 mph or so. When the '06 CS came out, it not only had higher gearing in the first two gears than the 997, but it also had higher gearing than the '06 Boxster S , which had 280 hp at that time. One way to increase acceleration of the CS would be to lower the gearing some, but that doesn't seem very simple. I've not understood why the gearing of the CS is as it is (the two top gears are both over-drives, for example), unless it was to help maintain the separation between the CS and the 997.

POST 9Original post

Hi from Austria ! You have stolen my pics ! This is my old gearbox in my garage ! Now you have to buy it ! Greetings !

POST 10Original post

Okay, I'll bite. How hard is it to swap the 6-speed gearbox for the 2.7L engine into a Cayman S ? And, what might that do for 0-60 times?

POST 12Original post

Hi again ! There is nothing to find except "made in Germany", "VW" and " Audi " on the 5-speed-gearbox.I did a conversion to 6-speed from a Boxster S `07 and the 6-speed-gearbox is definitely made by Getrag. But the 6-speed-gearbox has a very big disadvantage - the weight ! Best regards !

POST 13Original post

gearbox looks identical to passat /a4 platform. ive had a few of these out. vag group make most of there gearboxes in house. engines grygor hungary plant / gearboxes kassel plant. (plus others of course, but these are the biggest.)

POST 14Original post

i wonder if the bellhousing is the same bolt pattern as v.a.g ? it looks it ! possible 1.8t / other v.a.g engine's in the future ! even the old water cooled flat four (i used to rebuild these when i was a apprentice !). thats another thing - is the porsche bottom end similar to the vag water boxer ?. i know they share a lot of stuff !

POST 15Original post

Do you have any pics of your 6-speed gearbox?

POST 16Original post

I swore the 5 speed in my cayman said aisin on it...

POST 17Original post
