Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Has anybody else seen this? I take a long drive, about 200 miles. Park the car overnight and when I check the oil level the next morning it shows two notches down. Then I drive arround town just a few miles and park the car again. The next morning I check the oil level and it shows one notch down as the they I picked it up. What gives??? I don't want to add any oil if it is not needed. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

To get an accurate reading the car must be on a level surface. Best time to check the oil level is first thing in the morning as the level will have settled.

I seem to recall reading in the DM that stop and go short around town driving leads to gasoline mixing in with the oil, and then a long extended drive will cause the gasoline to be burned off... Thus, oil stays up as gas mixes around town, then a large amount of oil appears to be consumed as the gasoline is purged from the oil... HTH.

It is possible for the oil level to be right at the (in between) level. I'm sure that there are a series of sensors in the pan that detect oil level and yours is a couple ounces shy of one of the sensors. I've found that heat expands the oil and has caused 2 different readings in my car. The way I see it is everything is working well and the oil level is spot on, within ounces of perfect. You may want to add just a touch of oil just to monitor burn off, thats what I'm gonna do.

Jimsoucal----I hope what you read referred to the minute amounts of contaminants (not raw gasoline in a modern, computer-controlled engine) that always get past the rings and into the crankcase. These contaminants will accumulate faster if the oil never reaches operating temp. But not possibly enough to affect oil quantity readings. No worries about day-to-day variations in oil level within one bar, whatever the circumstances as long as the car is level when read, as suggested.
