Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hello, I've been doing a lot of research about the current audio system in the Cayman S because I am planning on introducing new amplification into the factory speakers and add a subwoofer. However, I have one question that I cannot seem to find the answer to without taking the car apart, so I'm hoping maybe some of you who have taken your cars apart can tell me. What is the route that the speaker wires we see coming out of the amplifier in the front trunk take to get to the speakers? Do they go directly to the speakers or do they connect to the PCM in some way first? I just have to figure out exactly where to tap into the current copper wire system and cannot do it at a point where the factory system would introduce amplifcation into the signals. Thanks in advance, Suneet

Answering my own question again... Figured I'd put it in just for information. I've been reading the Porsche 987 PCM and ASK amplifier wiring diagrams for the past 2 hours now trying to figure this out and I'm pretty sure I'm right. The amplifier in the front trunk of the Cayman isn't connected via fiber optic, it's all copper. I just detached mine and the only wires that go into it are 1) switched positive wire, 2) dedicated 12v wire, 3) ground (earth), 4 bi-polar speaker cables offer a full range of speaker level input, and 3 bi-polar speaker wires then output to each door subwoofer and the center channel. No fiber optics... I was hoping this wouldn't be the case and each of those wires actually connected each of the speakers because this would allow me to amplify each speaker from that point. And I'm still hoping I'm wrong and one of you will prove it for me. - Suneet p.s. if you are planning on upgrading the power to these speakers or want to know which color cable goes\comes from which channel or signal, pm me.

Hi There Doing much the same, but found the perfict front end to retune with, its a audio control DQL-8 which takes sp input and has AUX . I will add 4ch amp for front/rear mids and 4ch bridged to 2ch for door woofer and seperate D class sub amp. Will put the electronics in the front boot and sub in rear, i think? havent decided which brand yet, alpine, boston or infinity. If you do finf the colour codes please let me know as i am going to do it as soon as i come back from holidays. I would appreciate any help you could offer. I would like to help others in this site as i am from an electronics back ground and have done up a few last was a RX8 with DVD and 5.1 with similar problems. My cayman is a cdr24 unit without Bose so it sound like we have a similar problem.

Suneet- are these the 4 bi-polars that go out from CDR-24? If yes then how are the Dash/Doors/Rears powered? If your answer is, the CDR-24 then, which wires from the CDR-24? The same that go to the ASK? I just got my D3 and want to iron out this before going to the installer. -Stevie

Stevie refer to the wiring diagram file 20.pdf that I sent you, you will see the the rear left and right bipolars go straight to the rear midrange speakers, the front bipolars split off and go to the ASK amplifier, and the front midranges and tweeters (which are on a crossover). So basically the front bipolars feed the front midrange speakers and tweeters, and send a line level signal to the ASK, which will feed the door subs and center channel. The rear bipolars feed the rear midranges. When you install the AVIC, make sure you attach the remote lead from the ASK amplifier and the antenna lead to the AVIC, as tres_X did in his write up on the AVIC-D3 install, this will keep your ASK amp and all 9 of your speakers working. Again, the file 20.pdf has pin locations on which speaker cable is which, if you want I can resend it to you. Hope this helps... - Suneet

Basalt, pm me your email address and I will send out a wiring diagram for the sound package plus and cdr-24\PCM headunit. - Suneet

POST 7Original post

Suneet, that accounts for two bipolars going to the ASK but, didn't you state above that there were four bipolars inputs going into the ASK? -Stevie

POST 8Original post

Stevie, My bad... I just looked over the ASK amplifier wiring chart, it looks like the rear signals split off and input to the ask amplifier too. Like tres-X said though, all that wiring happens behind the scenes and all you need to worry about is getting the 4 bipolars connected properly to the new headunit, the ASK amplifier will pick up the signal automatically as long as its power lead is connected. - Suneet
