I was talking to the guys at GT One this evening and I was told that the 996 & 997 engines are now available from Porsche for just under £6k plus VAT new with yours as an exchange (presumably so they can destroy the evidence) The new engines come fully assembled with an alternator on top, oil in the sump and a flywheel. Just bolt on the box jack it up, fill it with coolant and it's plug & play from there on in.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I dont know what previous cost was but that seems very good value and must be of some relief to those out there who have had engines go. Is that a fitted price though? I assume this is as a result of the widely (if not disproportionate) discussed issues and will bolster second hand values.
Not fitted Chris - what do you want, blood? GT One charge £55/hour + VAT for their labour, so about half the labour cost of an OPC. If you reckon on a days work then it would be about £7,500 including VAT or about 60% of what you would have paid an OPC a couple of months ago.
Porsche have recently dropped a lot of their parts prices (for older cars) and are making them available through independents. Look at the recent advertising by Jasmine, JZM, etc. for original Porsche parts for older (ie, non-997) cars which are much cheaper than they were ever before. I don't believe it is anything to do with the 996 engine issue.
I wonder if they'd take a 3.6l engine in px for a 3.8S engine 8) £6k well spent if so...
what about the 3.4 engines? Can we get cheap replacements?
Why not give Peter at GT One a call and ask him. Say that Stewart with the red 964 RS mentioned it to you and I'm sure if he can do it, he will.
