Want to test my brakes work well - and practice an emergency stop in my recently purchased Boxster S. Is there any risk of the air bags going off when performing an emergency stop?! Many thanks! Darren

POST 2Original post

No, not unless you`ve fitted the super grabber 9000 brake, tyre and remotely deploying anchor package. You need to hit something with a fair old force for the airbags to deploy (to the extent that they will not always deploy in an accident). Henry Edited by Henry-F on Thursday 23 August 14:32

POST 3Original post

Not a chance in hell of them going off, no matter how hard you brake.

Many thanks! Darren On the Porsche driving experience day, we were doing emergency stops from 60-0, 100-0, 150-0 etc I'm not sure we would have been doing that if there was a risk of the airbag going off !! Just one question - why do you want to practice emergency stops???!! Sidicks

POST 7Original post

not a chance unless the brakes fail and you go careering into a wall.

POST 8Original post

No risk of the airbag going off - but if you're going to smoke (/destroy) your tyres it's far more fun to practice accelerating absurdly off the lights. Edited by wrn on Thursday 23 August 16:01

Better safe than sorry And I haven't used a car with ABS before - so want to familiarise myself with it + braking effectiveness of the car.

Can't believe people are selling Porsches without explaining these things. I sincerely hope not but you may also not be aware of the Boxster's handling characteristics. The boxster (and the S in particular) is set up as standard with an inverted negative camber at the back to make it turn in sharply and provide as much feel as you are no doubt experiencing at the moment. The downside of this is that there are some situations that can catch out the unwary or inexperienced driver, often resulting in a fatal accident. I would hope that whoever sold your Boxster to you explained all this, but i am aware there are some unlicensed Porsche dealers out there who don't So as an aide memoir (and really this should be demonstrated to you rather than told) always keep in mind the following 5 rules to stay safe: In a third gear right hand bend with the top down, NEVER brake whilst turning. In a second gear left hand bend with the top up, ALWAYS keep the PSM on. When accelerating through a series of bends, NEVER touch the throttle. If you feel the back end start to slide, UNLOCK the aad Airbag Activation Device. Over 100 MPH with the top down, REGULARLY wear a hair band. Remember these and you'll be fine. Happy driving

Does it pull up straight, will it try and spin on you, how does the ABS actually feel in operation etc... Far better to know how your car reacts when used to the full than to try and figure it all out in an emergency

Would be pretty scary if the car was accelerating without touching the throttle

POST 27Original post

I've had a throttle cable snap, it was a BMW by the way, that's quite interesting as well if you are doing a reasonable speed in heavy traffic.

POST 28Original post

It isn't stupid to test how quickly you can stop a car by practising emergency stops. If the first time you actually need to do one is the first time you have done one, you are unlikely to do it well. Many drivers don't brake hard enough (particularly now that most cars have abs and the surprise of the abs activating may cause some drivers to ease off the pedal.) Also, there are drivers who brake much harder than they need to, increasing the risk of skidding or causing a following vehicle to go into you. I have braked as hard as possible without activating the abs, from 20mph and 30mph and found a modern car can stop in a much shorter distance than the (long outdated) diagram in the UK Highway Code shows.

Porsche sent us to Millbrook when we bought our Cayman years ago and amongst other stuff we did this:- Accelerate to 130mph, take hand off steering wheel and stamp as hard as possible on brake. Car stops in a straight line. Felt like you had dropped an anchor out the back. You could feel car keeping itself straight. On return leg, well over 100mph said imagine a tractor is pulling out of a gate and you need to slalom round it while braking as hard as you can. Utterly amazing how it held it together. Gave real confidence in the car. You will be pleased to know the airbag didn't go off.l

Brakes are brakes mate, use them in an emergency and trust that if the car has a current MOT they’re fine. I can remember when I switched from a SLK 55 6/4 Pot brake calipers set up to a 997 base brakes, I thought the Porsche brakes were seriously lacking. They take getting used to, more pressure, but I’d suggest learning the car, staying within its limits and you’ll learn to trust it.

The braking performance was one of the most impressive thing about the cars.
