Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ive started to hear a high pitched whine that happens while driving and lasts for a few seconds up to about 20-30 seconds. If I open the windows it is stronger from the passenger side. It does not make the noise when the car is idling or when I rev out of gear. As the car warms up it does it after strong accelerations but stays quiet otherwise. The sound is much louder with the windows open. I am guessing that it is fuel pump related. Someone from the 40 Jahre local community thinks it might be the vapor vent valve, Any other ideas? Is the car ok to drive?

POST 2Original post

My guess is that it is the vent valve (ORVR?) located on top of the fuel tank. To me, it sounds like a low-pitch whistle (almost like a boat whistle) coming from the fuel filler area when you are sitting in the driver's seat. And yes, it should be perfectly safe to drive - assuming it is the vent valve.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the reply. It is quite a high pitch uneven spinning whine, a bit metallic. Not really like a low pitched boat whistle.. I recorded it last night but unable to post it because it is not a compatible file, I guess. I suppose I will take it in to the shop..

Wheel/hub bearing possibly? I know that would be constant but when they heat up they do go quite until they are almost ready to fail. Just a thought

Additional sources of noises that I have heard over 23 years of ownership. Failing SAI bearing make a high pitched whine coming from left rear that goes away after the cats are heated up and the SAI is not needed. Can even sound like a buzz saw. Low power steering fluid makes a whole symphony of different noises coming from the right rear. Failed AOS diaphram can also make a sound.
