Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

whats up ? just wanted to know whats the clicking sound one gets from the car when its turned off , i was told its the cooling down of the metal , but i get exactly the same sound when waiting on a traffic light or the car is idle, how can i minimize it ? it gets annoying sometimes. CS 2007

POST 2Original post

i dont like it either. i dont think you can do anything about it. i heard it helps cool it down also

POST 3Original post

There is a ticking sound that you get from the metal cooling down when the car is turned off. The ticking sound at idle I have always attributed to the exhaust system. It sounds like there is some part of the metal that is flexing or moving to produce the "tick". It doesn't bother me though. I'd take it in to the dealer and have a tech take a listen to make sure it is something benign.

Just as Fadiboy said. And from searching a previous poster (Silversled) said " Stainless exhaust, heat shields and hardware make a pinging sound when expanding or contracting relative to each other from heat and cold. This is normal ." That is when the car is off. If you are hearing a pinging when the car is running it could be a problem of some sort. As another poster (ChrisR) put it " The bad ping is the kind that is also know as detonation: when the air and fuel mixture in the combustion chamber ignites before the spark plug lights it off in a controled manner. The 'ping' you hear is the sound of the piston rattling down the walls of the cylinder wall. Not good."

POST 5Original post

The sound I get when the car is cooling down is more of a "ping" or "ting" sound.

POST 6Original post

i do have stainless exhausts , so this might be the problem .
