Had the front bumper assembly off my 996 to get to the radiators/condensers so I thought I would take a look for the cable goes from the hood release mechanism to just inside the front wheelarch area, drivers side. This is the cable that is not mentioned in the drivers manual or anywhere else for that matter unless you look online and realise it was put there as an emergency release if the electric solenoid mechanism fails and there is no other way in. What was interesting was at sometime somebody had looped three nylon cable ties together, through the hoop in the end of the emergency cable and then cleverly put the end of the cable tie closest to the outside of car just behind the indicator repeater on the wing – see photos. So in this case it's not even necessary to get behind the inner wheelarch cover and search for the end of the cable – simply pop out the indicator repeater and there is the end of the cable tie to pull and release the hood – simples!
