Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As with subject, my exhaust tips are bothering me. Its not by much but want to get them aligned.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is what it looks like now.

POST 3Original post

The height's are OK and generally in the right place. A gentle tap with a rubber mallet onto a small block of wood positioned on the right hand inside edge of each tip... The joint between the tips and the exhaust pipe is generally speaking, in the same horizontal plane as you want to adjust, so should be ok. You wont damage anything if it doesn't go to plan, they just wont necessarily be exactly where you want them...

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you. I'll try that. I was nervous about doing just that.

POST 5Original post

C4Sbolts clamping the tips are slightly different to other 996 I believe. There is a link pipe between the tip and the back box/muffler. The tips have a clamp bolt to the link pipe and the link pipes have a clamp and bolt and nut that go to the back boxes. The bolts can be seized so give them a douse of Plus Gas or similar and don't go bonkers trying to loosen them as they shear or round the bolt heads. With everything slightly loose you can adjust them up/down. sideways and in and out to get perfect alignment with the rear bumper cut outs.

POST 6Original post

I have just removed my exhaust system and cleaned up the very clamp that has been mentioned. I suggest you sprat the clamp bolt with WD and as mentioned a little tap should do the trick, id not then just losen the aforementioned WD'd bolt and er apply the hammer. You migh need to get the back up a few inches. If you live near n london i will help you apply the hammer Obviously i meant spray, a sprat is a small fish.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks mate I'll give it a go first.... I'll raise the back, get some spray on it and then tap it with the mallet. I'm in Redbridge right by London . Thanks to everyone else too that responded.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oops.. didn't take much. Even after this freed itself and I loosened the top part of the pipe it wouldn't budge.

POST 9Original post

It doesn't appear you have any height issues, more sideways, but I had a droopy left tip until I fitted new engine mounts, not sure if this could also be effecting yours...?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mounts are OK. It's the left right movement that I want to address. Hoping as long as I can get it symmetrical ill be ok. I tried with the right pipe to move it out and that's the clamp that failed. Don't want the same to happen again with the left so will put on a new clamp first. Also for now I've secured it with strong cable ties. Hopefully it doesn't melt with the heat!

POST 11Original post

Whnen I read the title of the post, thought to myself that it might be a C4S... in my experience (noting that I have Fabspeed silencers) there isn't much adjustment in the tips left to right - it's the exhaust itself. But I think it is a case of diminishing returns, and to get them perfect is nigh on impossible. Get them 80% and be happy with that!

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think you might be right. They went funny after the Milteks went in! Left one didn't really move much but the right one did. Anyway I might just put the clamp back on when it arrives and be done with it.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I've managed to add some more lubricant to the 16mm bolt that holds the tailpipe and I've managed to get some rotation but it doesn't move in the way I want. It doesn't go up and down but when I rotate the right pipe it comes down too low but centred. The left pipe rotates too but again this doesn't move towards centre. It just goes higher and lower on that far llet side when rotated. Don't think there is any give here at all so put it back to a place that's best for it which is similar to how it was before I started. New clamps ordered so I'll sort that permanently soon.

POST 14Original post

How about nudging the plastic bumper to the left. Loosen the top clamp under the engine lid and gently push the bumper the way it needs to go. There is some flex left to right in the fitting. Might work along with loosening the rear centre, under bumper fixings at the same time.... Re-tighen when happy of course.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This never crossed my mind - really? Looks pretty fixed but if it works and doesn't take anything out I'm up to try it.
