Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After many years of waiting, I have taken the plunge and bought my first Porsche, a '99 Carrera 4. The car is great, however I note on occasion on starting that the ignition switch is a bit sticky and the wipers and air-con do not function until you 'wiggle' the key anti-clockwise. Is this something others have experienced?

POST 2Original post

Hi, The ignition Switch barrel is a common wear and tear failure on a 996, you'll probably have a bit of lateral movement with the key inserted which is causing the electrical issues you have. Not entirely certain but this could be quite expensive to fix esp if you need new keys (at £150 a throw) as well. - Simon

A new Ignition Switch is the answer I'm afraid. Regards Big Bob :bye:

POST 4Original post

It's a very common problem. The original switch is no longer available as a separate part from Porsche, and you have to buy the complete housing from them at a cost of around £150. However, you can still buy the switch by itself from a VW dealer for about £22. The part number is the same as the Porsche number: 4A0 905 849B.

POST 5Original post

It's £250 to get the entire piece replaced and fitted at an OPC. The keys don't need re-programming though. It's just a pure mechanical part.
