Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Guys, Got my car in for a service... I have noticed since i have had the car that there is a noise like a metal tapping coming from the engine. I have told my OPC who have come back and said its the Oil pump and it is normal. Mostly hear it when its idle, people have commented that its the botton end, it is that loud. I have a OPC warranty, so just wanna know is it normal? if it is not normal then i will escalate.. Thanks Bash

POST 2Original post

if it goes away if you gently increase the revs it's a normal rattle, at least I have heard it on every turbo I have stood next too. My OPC said it's some sort of layshaft? but that there is a known tolerance & that if it does not dissappear at above 3000 rpm ('ish, from memory) then they investigate further. "They all do that sir"

POST 3Original post

Mine (non-turbo) does that, and my Indy commented on it first time they looked at the car, but it has done it for the last 60,000 miles so I'm not too worried about it  Noise goes away above about 1500 rpm.

POST 4Original post

Hello It is the intermediate shaft into the oil pump drive and they all rattle a little,as said before if it goes away at 3000Rpm then its acceptable ! i remember a customer saying his 306 Diesel car was quiter than his £100K turbo cabriolet .....! We see alot of turbos with this noise you are describing and 99% of them are acceptable...seen 1 tried to be repaired and it was no better £8K later. Mike

POST 5Original post

Agree with Mike above, I had similar noise with 996TT and Parr said oil pump, seems to be a common trait ... Porsche are very good at designing cars that make a noise but just not the right noise ... will they ever get the exhaust note right :?:

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys for your feedback... The service guys have said that the warranty guys won't do anything about it unless it gets worse  Anyway if its a 'normal' noise then i can live with it. I had the minor service which they advertised at £405 + £15 top up oil both incl vat... but funny how the invoice i got was £474!!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Found out what the extra cost is... basically as described by the service manager 'consumables that are not covered by the warranty when warranty work is done' :?:

POST 8Original post

apologises for the daft question......but what is the first "T" stand for in 996TT? I assume the 2nd one is "turbo"

POST 10Original post

Oh GOD... Please don't start him off ! :wack:

POST 11Original post

Porsche never called it that tho'.......a TT is an Audi isn't it?, for a Porsche it should always be 911 "turbo"
