Although I love my Cayman GTS , it's hard to not keep my eye on what's next . I'm not excited about 4 cyl engines, so the 718 is probably out. (I'm not trying to open up that argument, so I'd rather not discuss that aspect here....) I'm currently in love with look of the Targa. I've seen a few comments on forums and heard a few asides in reviews saying "you'll never take a Targa to the track, anyway". I like getting my CGTS to the track for PCA HPDE events at least a few times a year, but I'm not too serious about it - it's really just a lot of fun to be able to open the car up and see how much more capability the car has than I will ever tap! I know the Targa top is a lot of weight in the wrong location, but aside from that, is there a reason a Targa wouldn't be fun to drive on the track for a few HPDE sessions a year? Why does it have an image that it's not track capable? I'm a few years away from making a move, anyway, and at that point who knows what current state of the 911 will be, so this may be a totally moot thought exercise... but I think I have a problem!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I drove a 991 Targa around the small track at the Atlanta Porsche center and based on that I'd say it would be fine for an occasional HPDE. Would not be a first choice for a regular track car due to the weight (roof mech, AWD) but it's certainly capable enough to have fun at 7 to 8/10ths.
Will every group allow it on the track? I know PCA would, but you may want to check if BMWCCA (or whatever groups you run with) would allow it, since their 'vert rules are pretty strict. The new targas do looks quite nice.
By the same standard, a C7 Corvette coupe should not be allowed nor would a Lotus Exige. I'm not saying you're wrong but it doesn't stand to reason. I don't even understand why the Targas have a roof mechanism and not just a manually removable top. Looks like two latches could hold that thing on.
Targa is the heaviest 911 if I remember correctly. It has 4WD and the top which adds a lot of weight. There are also some performance options not available with the Targa such as SPASM (I forget what the technical reason is). I wouldn't say the Targa is not track capable at all, however of all the 911s , this one is the least capable on the track......but you will look fantastic doing it!
