Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know this might sound like a stupid question but since owning my 996TT I cant help thinking the engine sounds alot more mechanical if you know what I mean? :? Ive had a C2 and a C4 before and cant remember the engines sounding quite the same but it seems if you get close to the underside of the case you can hear alot more of the internal workings i.e. crankshaft and detonations. Only seems to happen when the engine is fully up to temperature and been out on the road for a while. Someone please tell me this is normal and I'm worrying uneccessarily.

POST 2Original post

Well I seriously hope you can't hear detonation :? . Also as you are suggesting that you hear these noises when you get close to engine then I presume these are heard at idle and not under load? Clearly the engine is more complicated with the twin turbo set up but not sure that would cause additional noise at idle. Have you moved from air cooled to water cooled? The newer engines have a dry sump and should be quieter under load. When stationery you clearly don't have the road and tyre noise which will add to the engine noise. I suspect that if the car drives fine without issue then you are unduly worrying but if in doubt take it to a specialist.

POST 3Original post

They are more mechanical sounding (Tappety) at idle then a C2 or C4 but nowhere near as "bag of nails" as a GT3 starting from cold.

POST 4Original post

sometimes you will tend to hear the gearbox chattering aswell which is quite normal

POST 5Original post

Yes forged pistons have that affect....I used to have a Mazda with a built engine including forged pistons and it sounded worse than a diesel when cold. I believe that there is around 10 times more expansion/slop in a forged piston over a cast one .

POST 6Original post

There is no comparison between the TT, GT3 and GT2 engines and C2 / C4. They are vastly different and much noisier. For that you get more reliability. Enjoy it, it's a feature!

Pheww - thanks Spoke to OPC Reading earlier who last serviced it 1000 miles ago just to confirm if they would have noticed anything untoward and confirmed all ok. I'll go back to enjoying it now
