Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Having had TVR's and Lotuses what can I expect from this 1999 996 carerra 2 manual with 85k on the clock.......pills at the ready

POST 2Original post

A lot fewer headaches! Do a search on the forum for RMS and brake discs & pads. These issues crop up sometimes, not always but appear to be the only 2 minor faults talked about in 996 circles. With the discs it's almost always a case of the inner sides rusting though that is largely down to non-use of the cars or them being parked outdoors where they are exposed to the elements. ~ Maxie

2002 996 C4S, 2 yrs, 25k miles, 55k total. Faults- New battery. Set of coil packs. I've been lucky, but you may get radiator issues, leaky engine seals (which don't matter unless they're really bad and comparatively cheap to fix) and you do hear about the occasional engine going pop. However, its a very, very rare fault in comparison to say VANOS failure on M3 engines, but no-one seems to worry about that. Any car suffers from brake disc corrosion if left lying about after getting wet/washed.

Had minea year now and touch one not a thing has gone wrong other than the rms which was sorted by the dealer before it came to me. Very very different to Lotus ownership which in my 7 year experience was constantly touch and go and fraught with problems. In terms of build quality the two are on different planets. Still love the Elise though and it now winters in my garage while the big boy does the other stuff with ease.
