has anyone else had the problem of phone echo (i.e. the person you are speaking to can hear there own voice)? I am wondering if having my microphone fitted in front of the dials is not the best place.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

No - I've had no issues with the phone module (PCM2).
The telephone module on the PCM1 unit I had in mine was pretty awful for echoing. Best thing to do is take it out and stick something else in. I put a Kenwood DNX 7220 in mine and it is vastly superior. Other people have gone the Pioneer Avic route with similar results.
I have an alpine head unit in mine with the bluetooth (and Ipod connectivity)
Triff, Just a thought - your microphone may be in the wrong place. It should be hidden behind a small vent-like disc to the right of the dials (have a look in your manual) - you refer to it as being in front of the dials though. I'd assumed you had the Porsche PCM1 / PCM2 phone module doesn't appear to be the case.
I've also got Alpine/blue/ipod etc and the mic is presently mounted up by the rear view mirror. I've only had one occasion when I had feedback, when the guy I was phoning was also on his handsfree. I was thinking of hiding mine just to tidy things up TB
cheers guys - sounds like its in the wrong place.
