® 911 (996) Technical Information W103 2/005 Scope 2 (cont’d.) 2.4 Use a round steel-wire brush to grind all corroded areas on the folded seam on the inside of the lid. Note: Do not use a brass brush. Brass particles can cause electrochemical corrosion in the seam. 2.5 Clean the ground areas with thinner, then apply primer with a small paintbrush. Make sure the areas are completely covered with primer, particularly the corners and edges. The drying time of the primer is approximately 1 hour. Using a fan to dry the primer can shorten this time. 2.6 Seal the rear edge and the left and right sides of the folded seam (arrows, figure 2) as follows: - Apply adhesive tape on the sides of the folded seam so that the folded seam is exposed 3 to 5 mm. - Apply sealant on the folded edge, spread smooth, and remove the tape. - Allow the sealant to dry for approxi mately 4 to 5 hours. Moistening the applied sealant with water can shorten the drying time. 2.7 Paint the primed and sealed areas fol- lowing the instructions in the Porsche Paint Manual, Group L 5. Figure 2 2.8 When the paint is dry, reinstall the seal on the lid. 2.9 Install the lid on the vehicle using the reference marks made to line up the hinges. Install the bolts and tighten them up lightly. 2.10 Close the rear lid and adjust the gap dimensions. Tighten up the bolts. 2.11 If the latch was removed, install it and align it with the lower latching point. Torque the bolts to 7.5 ftlb. 2.12 Connect the electrical connection and attach the harness to the pneumatic spring on the right hinge. 2.13 Carry out a function test on the rear lid and on the 3rd brake light in the spoiler. On the cabriolet, check the functioning of the microswitch for the rear-lid/convertible-top interlock. With the rear lid open, it should not be possible to operate the convertible top. 2.14 Cabriolet only – If a fixed “Carrera” spoiler is fitted, open and close the convertible top gradually and have a second person check the clearance (A, figure 3) between the convertible-top compartment lid and the “Carrera” rear spoiler. The dimension must be at least 5 mm. 2.15 Enter the service action into the Warranty and Maintenance booklet. Figure 3 Date: 02-09-01 ©2001 Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Page 6 of 10 Service
