For the jack, I haven't had a problem with the valve type you describe and I've swapped complete sets of wheels on my drive a few times now.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello! Are they're any here that do their own spannering on their Cayman? I had to get a wheel off as I had pot hole gifted flat (Grrrr!) but really didn't get a feeling of confidence that the "cheap" jack I got was entirety up to the job. Lets just say I couldn't get the axle stand in place quick enough. Any recommendations for a half decent jack? Preferably one that lowers via the bar rather than a valve turn.... Cheers T1b

POST 2Original post

You need a low profile jack, and I use the Wolf Black in this link: https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/product-group-tests/... They're all valve based, so not quite what you're looking for, but mine works for me.

POST 3Original post

I’ve used one of these on my Z4 for a few years with no problems. The big wheels work quite well on rougher surfaces as well. There’s enough space available for the BMW jacking pad so I would have thought the Porsche one should fit. https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-ctj2qlp-2-t...

POST 4Original post

Also worth picking up one of these, or something similar, if you haven't already: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274613098634

Twinfan said: Also worth picking up one of these, or something similar, if you haven't already: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274613098634 Yup I got some of those but found the ones I got wouldn't stay in place so pretty much had to hold it up while getting the jack in position and raised. Not easy! Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I had to raise it with up down lever action (like a normal jack) but then remove the bar and twist the valve to lower it (which seemed a bit cheap, which of course it was)

POST 6Original post

I have one of these https://www.sgs-engineering.com/tja15r-light-alumi... Very happy with it.......

POST 8Original post

Costco sell a heavy duty low profile jack which is ideal and quick pump compared to some.

POST 9Original post

I prefer a hockey puck as it lifts straight. 8f the one with a porsche peg is used, it will try to move on the jack as you lift.

POST 10Original post

I've a Halfords low profile trolley jack. Works brilliantly. Agree with Twinfan on getting for pucks.

POST 11Original post

SGS is generally my go to for things like this. I have this one https://www.sgs-engineering.com/tj2-5lp-low-profil... its low enough and long enough to reach every part of the car with ease. The only downside is it's very heavy, about 40kg. That said its reassuringly hefty so I have no worries of it failing while a car is being lifted

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Seen a few videos on the SGS, it looks like a decent bit kit

POST 13Original post

Both the "standard" and low profile Halfords trolley jacks I have leak and don't stay reliably, the low profile one after really not a lot of use. I replaced it with an Arcan one from Costco which was on offer at the time. Feels a much more robust product. I've lost 2 jacking pucks now by forgetting to remove them from under the Cayman. Thankfully didn't do any damage when they made their bids for freedom. I think I was so happy to finally get the handbrake shoe springs as they should be that I totally forgot all else as I just wanted the job to be over. Lesson learned.

I bought one of these for working on my car: https://www.primetools.co.uk/product/facom-dl-2lp-... Much better & easier to use than my old sealey 2500. The facom is a bargain at the price.

POST 17Original post

Twinfan said: Only 1.25 tonnes though, not sure I'd use it on a 1.4 tonne Cayman? Max capacity should be at least 75% of the weight of your car (according to my jack leaflet). Unless you are putting the jack in the middle and lifting the whole thing. Not recommended however sturdy the jack

POST 18Original post

I had an SGS trolley jack fail. Wouldn’t buy another.

I'm generally lifting only half of a car weighing 1400 kilos ... but low entry is very important for me. The alternative is to drive the car onto chocks at the side to be lifted, a right pain !

I have the cheapo 2t Halfords low profile. I got it for free for some reason as it was reduced and I had earned vouchers of all sorts and they were cumulative. Still even at £50 it is excellent and has been sturdy and stable for many wheel swaps on the M2 of similar weight to the Cayman and the 2 hatches. https://www.halfords.com/tools/garage-workshop/axl... POST 31Original post

I bought the 3-tonne low-profile jack from SGS. I hadn't realised how heavy it would be, or how slowly it would pump up as a result. However it feels solid as a rock and easily slides under my Boxster S. The fact that it could theoretically lift the entire car twice over is reassuring, assuming it doesn't fail. I'm not silly enough to get under the car when it's supported only by the trolley jack. I have some heavier cars too, and if we have to drive EVs in the future, then cars are only going to get heavier. Hopefully this thing will last me a lifetime of home servicing.

Unless they do ban petrol in the next 20yrs or make it unviable to run a petrol car I sincerely hope I'm never jacking an EV up at home! Good point though, weight will be an issue going forward!

POST 42Original post

Definitely quite the weekend for trolley jacks from Halfords! I bought myself one of the "Advanced" low profile 2 tonne on Friday, as it's time for the spring swap back off winter rubber for my Cayman GTS 4.0. I have an earlier version of the budget one @Bennno mentions, and it has been amazing for the last 5 or 6 years. However it doesn't quite go under my 981 GT4 since it was lowered, so I end up driving the car onto wooden pads that I cut out for the purpose, which is a faff. Still have it as a spare, and must say it owes me absolutely nothing, as it has been used lots. The new one is lower profile (comfortably fits under the GT4), much more stable, and you don't have to remove the handle to lower the lifted car. It's not the aluminium one, as I went for the lowest minimum height just in case. It's very heavy (34 Kg?), but that's fine by me. Works really well. https://www.halfords.com/tools/garage-workshop/axl... I also bought a couple of the rubber lifting pads that @Twinfan mentioned from eBay. They turned up in the post just as I was torqueing the wheel bolts back up after changing the wheels! Definitely a brilliant idea that I will be using next time I need to lift a Cayman.
