The only issue is waiting for iDataLink to come up with a module that will work for the 996, which isnt available and I was told to not hold my breath.

Not trying to be rude, but you're attempting to put a more modern version of MOST - PCM version 3> into a system that used older PCM programming language.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, I wanted to know if anyone had done a retrofit of a newer factory head unit into their 996? I have a 2002 C4 Cab and would love to retrofit the 2013 Panamera Head unit into my car. I know I could get it to fit I chose that because my mom just got a 2013 Panamera S and I studied the head unit to teach her how to use it and it is amazing. The nav is awesome, the bluetooth phone and streaming and the tuner with built in XM is also really good. I actually really like the nav as it has an option to split screen with map on the left and route steps on the right. Also, you can select a bluetooth connected phone and a separate bluetooth streaming device at the same time. Maybe you can do this on all after market units? Obviously, I understand that I won't get the car specific integration like park assist, steering wheel controls, etc. Or if you know of a unit that will behave like the factory nav? Thanks for your replies!

POST 2Original post

Curious to see what kind of responses you get. Pretty sure I've seen threads that show later PCM HUs in the 996... in fact those were OEM in later years I think? The Panamera HU+NAV is double DIN right? Personally I like the sparseness of single DINs.

POST 4Original post

This is a fool's errand. I think most people (no pun intended) that understand Porsche MOST based systems don't even want to bother with responding to this post. Not trying to be rude, but you're attempting to put a more modern version of MOST - PCM version 3> into a system that used older PCM programming language. Stop while you're ahead.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been researching this and looks like its not going to be possible, at least with my limited set of skills. I've decided to put a Pioneer AVIC-8200 in the car. Seems like it has all the bells and whistles the newer PCM's have plus there is a port for a Maestro iDatalink, which will provide access to the OBD II data and display that on the screen as well as parking sensors, etc. The only issue is waiting for iDataLink to come up with a module that will work for the 996, which isnt available and I was told to not hold my breath. But at least the port is there in case they ever do come out with one for our cars. There is also some sort of steering wheel control thing that can be integrated and so if I ever find a steering wheel that I could retrofit to have steering wheel controls (would love just volume, mute and maybe a way to navigate the head unit) that will be an option in the future. Thanks all!

POST 6Original post

Forget the iDatalink and put the money towards a Durametric. Also, you'll need to purchase a wiring harness for the car unless your system is the newer MOST based and if that's the case, you're in for one hell of a wiring job. Did you want our advice or just need a sounding board?

Hey b3freak!! Thanks for the info. I would love your advice and any wisdom you could provide! Thanks!

Just post a picture of the setup and I'm sure many here on RL will help you out.

Read as much as you can about your car for a few more weeks and then start asking questions.

POST 10Original post

You are wise to go with an aftermarket unit. You'll get your best bang for the buck that way. I'm sure you could find somebody to install the newer Panamera unit in your 996, but you'd have to spend HUGE amounts of money for the custom work needed to make it work. I would guess it would be 10x the cost of an aftermarket unit, or more. Anything is possible if you throw enough $$$ at it....

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The more I research this, I think it would be impossible to install a newer PCM into the 996 and retain the specific Porsche functionality like Parking Sensors showing up, etc. The reason I think is because the pre-2003 996 didn't have the MOST bus and most of the communications between control units is on that network and not the either of the two CAN networks. I've been studying the wiring diagrams for my 2002 C4 Cab and I'm not even seeing the Parking sensor control unit even connected to the CAN network, main one or Komfort one. So even if you could hack it up somehow, the parking sensor functionality wouldn't show up anyway. But I had an interesting thought while doing this research. Looks like the 997 multi function steering wheel is CAN based and if you get a used one, most likely get the control unit with it. There is a CAN interpreter/module from Pacer that hooks into the CAN network and listens for Porsche specific steering wheel commands from the steering wheel control module and then maps those commands into an aftermarket head unit like the AVIC 8200. Check out this video to see it in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqNUFwBRo0M#t=61.366682 A CAN-bus network is two wires, a high and a low and in theory, you could install the 997 steering wheel on the 996, wire up your own CAN -bus for linking the steering wheel control module to the Pacer unit to the Head Unit and you'd have steering wheel control of the after market head unit which also has great functionality. Heck even just splice into the existing CAN-bus so that the head unit can access all CAN broadcasts from all control units and maybe eventually utilize those messages. I might give it a go. Sounds like a fun hack. Anyone have any thoughts if this is possible or just a fantasy?
