I have a 2004 Targa with a CDR23 head unit and recently fitted a MoBridge unit bought from Polar Express.

I have the black connectors so I went to Cartronics in Surrey who fitted a patch harness, the OPC to enable the CDC for the MoBridge interface ( I've never had a multi disk in the front) and ripped out the CD storage container for a cubby hole much like the one underneath.

All I did was choose a playlist before I set off, so no need to do any illegal ipod fiddling while you are driving.

Porsche changed from an analogue to a MOST (fibre optic) bus system in 2003, so your car could have either.

If it's not post facelift then you have much more choice in the market including changing the head unit to one with iPod integration as standard and without a second mortgage.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anyone suggest the best way to get a proper connection from an iPod to the stereo of an 03 996?
I have an FM transmitter that plugs into the cigarette lighter, but i was looking for something more permanant- whilst hopefully not wrecking the dash with crude cradle attatchments etc.
The existing fitted stereo is just the CD player+ multi changer, not the PCM.
It depends on what stereo system you have in your car.
If it's a CDR23 or PCM1 (ie, with a cassette player), then the Dension IceLink will work fine.
If it's a CDR24 or PCM2 (ie, wide screen with sim slot), then the mObridge adaptor is best.

polar express- thanks- but its not a PCM at all- just the basic stereo with a single CD slot in car and a multichanger under the bonnet.
having looked at the Dension web page now it looks like they still might work... if so, any idea how easy they are to fit- and where the unit goes once fitted?
Sounds like the CR22 stereo. When I had one, I used the Dension. Its expensive, given how poor the technology is, but it does the job. There are two modes - I didnt like the automatic one as the stereo head unit simply doesnt have a good enough display to let you navigate the ipod easily and the Dension software is a bit crap. So I used the one that lets you skip tracks via the head unit, but most other navigation is done on the ipod. All I did was choose a playlist before I set off, so no need to do any illegal ipod fiddling while you are driving.
Consider running the cable down past the handbrake and into the centre glovebox thingy between your front seats. Ipod is hidden out of view and safe.
There is a thread on here somewhere which outlines how to remove the centre handbrake plastic cover thingy,to allow you to run the cable beneath it. And lots of threads on here on removing the stereo (which is dead easy). Its 1hr labour for a car stereo shop, max.
try this...

I bough one but have yet to install it. Means you no longer have use of the multi-disc changer but I can live with that for a good quality i-pod connection...
Howdy...What model head unit do you have? If your car is post facelift I'm assuming you have the CDR23 running MOST. If it's not post facelift then you have much more choice in the market including changing the head unit to one with iPod integration as standard and without a second mortgage.
I have a 2004 Targa with a CDR23 head unit and recently fitted a MoBridge unit bought from Polar Express. The unit works great but be aware that many 2003-2004 cars have slightly different fibre connectors (also know as ferrules) that are BLACK and made by a company called Yazaki. These are not actually MOST spec and are not compatible with the harness provided with any of the MOST compatible iPod kits that I've looked at. It's not the end of the world but it's important to know at the outset what connectors you have to work with. If your connectors are white and the fittings made by AMP (typically) then you're home dry with the standard harness provided with a MoBridge. To check this out you need to remove the head unit and on the end of the 2 orange fibres going into the back you'll see the connectors housed within the adaptor housing.

One particular thing about the MoBridge I like is that you can disable the iPod screen lock whilst it's connected. If you don't have PCM like me it makes a difference.
Takes a bit to sort it out but wouldn't be without it now : )
The Dension Ice Link Plus has now been upgraded to the Dension Gateway 100:

if you want to retain CD changer functionality then you can use:
http://densionice.co.uk/DensionGateway400.aspx
you can also add a blue tooth adapter to connect you iPhone

I just pulled this straight fron the Denison website... have not installed myself, but i'm considering... anyone used / installed these yet ?
The Dension works, but it has a number of well documented issues. Dension reverse engineer the iPod interface whereas mObridge are an authorised Apple software developer: this means that you can be assured the mObridge will work/interface correctly with all iPods/iPhones.
I know I'm an old codger that's yet to be dragged into the iPhone / iPod generation, but why would you want to lose the highest quality sound source in your car, for the sake of compressed convenience with no depth or richness of sound :?:
iPods are great for carrying loads of tunes when out and about, but a waste of a good sound system at home or in your car IMO (unless you haven't got a good sound system in your car of course?)
I have the 'normal' sound package, but even with Bose I doubt you'd notice. The Apple lossless AAC and MP4 and uncompressed AIFF files should be almost transparent to CD especially when listened in a car system. What you are effectively doing is getting rid of say a maximum choice of 1 in 90 songs to a choice of 1 in 1000's. Plus you have complete control over playlists and tracklistings. How many CDs can you say you actually love all the songs on there?
thanks for the feedback guys... am overseas right now so cant check what my stereo is, but it sounds like a mobridge may be the answer.
having said that, i'm really surprised that there seem to be no really slick ways to integrate the iPod- trailing wires and cradles on dash or ipod hidden in a cubby seems a bit poor to me! i want a head unit you insert the ipod into like a cassette and that has a full ipod screen on it... guess it will be a while before apple get around to car stereos though!
as to decent sound quality with very limtied choice [cd] vs massive choice and pretty damn good sound quality [ipod]... its no choice to me- ipod wins.
the sound quality in a car from an ipod is more than good enough for me..!
I recently did some training using an iPod played through a Mark Levinson ICE system and I hated it - just sounded flat and metallic compared to the original CD. Mind you, the 5.1 DVD recording of 'Dark Side of the Moon' just made me dissatisfied with any ICE afterwards
Having said all that, I don't even switch the audio system on in anything but the quietest of cars (certainly not the Porsche), as I can't tolerate interference and poor sound quality... I'd rather listen to the engine
Yes but it all depends on what bit rate the song you listened to was encoded at. IIRC all EMI new releases (from mid 2007) through itunes are 256kbps AAC as oppossed to 128kbps. On all but the best of systems it would be tranpasrent to CD, and then you should be listening to it on vinyl anyway, through valves...
:rocker:
was going to mention vinyl and valves myself... plus of course a good leather amchair and a labrador.
dont think the drivers seat is quite up to chesterfield (or Eames) standard, and i'm not letting a dog in my car... so its all moot to me- i'll keep my 8000 track library on the ipod any day
