Apologies in advance as this is probably an old chestnut of a question but may be with a different angle.

Suggestion · Original poster

I need an new set of tyres and would appreciate comment on selection of brand - over the next 6 months or so the car will be used daily on a 100 mile motorway commute so my interest is selecting tyres that are harder wearing would be prepared to trade off against ultimate roadholding.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi I have just joined this forum although I have had my 03 996 Targa for several years. Apologies in advance as this is probably an old chestnut of a question but may be with a different angle. I need an new set of tyres and would appreciate comment on selection of brand - over the next 6 months or so the car will be used daily on a 100 mile motorway commute so my interest is selecting tyres that are harder wearing would be prepared to trade off against ultimate roadholding. Currently car is on Conti's which I find adequate for my driving style - getting more cautious just age I guess Any views?

POST 2Original post

Best wet/dry performance and reasonable wear are Michelin SP2 in my opinion. Yokohama's are very soft and you'll get through these reasonably quickly. Conti's are good, but slightly louder than the Michelin and wear slightly quicker.

POST 3Original post

:agree: I changed from Conti's to Michelin sp2 and the ride is much more comfortable as I drive 70+ miles each day TB

POST 4Original post

I do about 18,000 miles per annum in my 996 C4 and I got 12,000 miles out of my last set of rear Conti SC2. Fronts are not even half worn in the same time. Really good wet grip too. OK, I haven't done any track-days and I don't smoke the tyres, but I do enjoy the back roads and I do some fairly interesting average speeds (look at the fuel economy thread for evidence!)

POST 5Original post

I got over 25k miles out of the rears of my 4S (Pirelli Pzeros). The fronts still have plent of wear left in them. Is this a record?? That was usage (160 mile round trip) similar to yours, and I enjoy a spirited B-road drive to the m-way at 06.30 as much as the next man... Seem reasonably quiet too.

POST 6Original post

I've found Pirelli Pzero Assimmetricos wear very well (25k mls +) on my C4. There is a trade off with ultimate grip in the wet though.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the advice Thanks everyone for the advice - I guess its decision time Thanks again Clive R

POST 11Original post

Hi Taffy, as above the hardest performance tyre out there are the Michelin PS2's (Pilot sport 2's), they won't grip as much as your Conti's but will take ages to wear out, road noise will be a little louder though. There were two versions made, German ones and ones from China, don't get the Chinese ones! Nice motor 8)

POST 12Original post

Oh and just incase you are around the Midlands/irmingham area, I have a great contact for PS2's for you
