Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I know this topic has been covered before but with no conclusive answers that I can find. So we're off to France tomorrow evening on the overnight Portsmouth to St Malo ferry. First time on the ferry for the 996. On our other cars we can disable the alarm motion/anti jacking sensor to prevent the alarm going off and flat battery. Nothing mentioned in the 996 handbook specifically about this but it does mention that locking the car twice in quick succession disables the internal infrared sensor. So question is, does locking the car via fob twice also disable the motion/antijacking/movement sensor? TIA Mark

POST 2Original post

Not sure if what you asked works but there is something else that might. Lock the car normally off the fob and the car will lock and arm the alarm. Unlock the car off the fob but don't open any doors or anything. After about 30 seconds the car will re-lock itself but does not arm the alarm. This worked for me when I was having random false alarms overnight but it was on my '99 mk1

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks that's interesting I'll do a couple of driveway tests and see what happens.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Initial tests. 1. Lock car with fob (alarm sets - Red LED on dash flashes when armed) and then unlock with fob, not opening doors. wait 60 secs car relocks but red light on dash flashes in same way as initial locking. So I'm assuming alarm is reset. 2. Lock car with fob and the press again. Car is locked but no red LED on dash. I'm assuming car is locked but alarm is not set. I'll try and confirm by rocking the car on the drive to see when the alarm goes of and when not. Not easy as a 996 isn't very easy to rock! Mark

POST 5Original post

I've just tried the mk1 and it does the same as you describe - the light still flashes after the auto-relock. It did prevent the random overnight false alarms though so which part of the system it turns off I don't know. Edit - found where I got the info from - seems to disable the interior movement sensors also. https://www.renntech.org/topic/30484-can-i-lock-the-doors-without-turning-the-alarm-on/

POST 6Original post

I've been on a few ferries in mine including 4 x 24 hours to Spain and recently over to the Outer Hebrides 2 weeks ago and all I ever do is the double click on the key fob and I've never had an issue with the alarm going off and getting a flat battery.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Many thanks! That's what I thought, just a bit strange that there's not info in the 996 owners manual about this.

POST 8Original post

Does locking the door with the key not lock all without arming the alarm?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Nope, just tried it and the dash LED flashes in the same way as if locked by the fob. Only way I've found to lock without the alarm LED flashing is the double click on the fob method.

POST 10Original post

Double tap on the fob all the way. I've had issues with the alarm on my 986, deMort thinks it could be the cabin sensor or the tilt sensor by the batt (the latter being a more common problem he says). I double tap each and every time, never get random alarms.

POST 11Original post

This page of the manual suggests there is no motion detection other than the interior sensors, which are deactivated as mentioned above by a double press of the fob button

POST 12Original post

http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=128155&highlight= This post indicates that there is a tilt sensor and I'm sure it went off when I jacked the car up to access the emergency release. DMorts advise was double clicking the fob only disabled he interior sensor and the tilt had to be coded out. As others have said though mine has been been on both the Portsmouth StMalo and Cherborg Portsmouth ferry and the alarm didn't trigger I suppose the worst case scenario is you get summoned from your bunk to swith the alarm off?

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I chickened out in the end and left the car unlocked on the ferry. Whilst waiting in the queue I locked the car and tried rocking it, quite hard to get a 996 to move much but couldn't get the alarm to go off. Anyway it provided a bit of entertainment for the others waiting for the ferry! I then started to wonder if there is a movement sensor? Mark
