I was waiting by the G.W. Bridge when the Engine of my Boxster exploded. It should like tin cans rattling together. We were literally about to switch lanes when it happened. I'm thinking, I may have killed a bearing. The car still drives, but it's has no oil left as it has poured itself all over the roadway. Prior to the "bang" the engine temp was @ 175 and oil was good. So, I don't know what happened. Of all the driving I did, it blows now and it only has 33k miles on it. Any suggestions? I'm hoping Porsche will cover it.....my bro says over rev, but never done that before and I know engines don't blow on their own....
What year?
What year is the Boxster? Some of the early ones (98 - 99) had a crankcase problem (sleeves were installed to attempt to fix it) and are known to blow
Intermediary Shaft? Same thing happened to my cousin who owns a 2005 C4S.
It's an 05 base 987? My Brother said I pushed the engine too hard? Is that even possible? I hit the red line several times, but never riding on it
Porsche is replacing the engine and it should be done by tomorrow!
are engine swaps pretty routine for Porsche techs ?
Yes, they are... it's no big deal... for the tech, anyway.

Intermediate Shaft Failure led to my engine's demise....
My engine was blown due a INTERMEDIATE SHAFT being broken off the bolts. Apparently the change was never made to the 987 engine. F.Y.I....I have a 1/05 production car....
hmm..i wonder what happened if the engine blows AFTER the warranty expires..will porsche still cover it? I got a 05 987 also and now i am starting to worry that my engine will blow..it's got less than 8000 miles right now...
Can someone explain what an 'Intermediate Shaft' is?
I think that when the late 90's Boxster engines were sucking up cylinder liners, Porsche reacted with a good will campaign in which they would provide a new engine for free to folks out of warranty if it was determined that this was the cause. The owner had to pay for its installataion.
Dam* its nice to be right once in a while
Sorry it happened to you but the engine my cousin received seems to be stronger than the old one. Good Luck!
Is an 'intermediate shaft' a connecting rod?

I'm not a mechanic, but check this reference:

Apparently these are only in boxer engines like ours?
Greg
Thanks Greg. It looks like the intermediate shaft is a shaft that runs parallel to the crankshaft. It runs by chain off the crankshaft, then each camshaft connects to this intermediate shaft by another timing chain. One in the front, one in the back. Very interesting.
You can see the front of the shaft in the bottom of this picture where the timing chain runs to the right camshaft.
OK, now that I know what an Intermediate Shaft is, I have a simple question. How the hell does an Intermediate Shaft break? There is nothing you could do to cause this to break, short of maybe over-revving the engine to the point where the right side valves plow into the pistons and lock the camshaft, at which point you would have such catastrophic engine failure that a broken intermediate shaft would be the least of your worries.
It sounds like in this case, the car was being operated normally and suddenly went 'POW' and failed. I can only assume that this failure was caused by a defective (cracked) shaft.
