Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The guy I used had never done it before but was an excellent welder..
Leading evidence: 'Use had never done it' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend someone' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
OP, you could possibly consider the 'gundo hack" which is where an extra piece of pipe is added between the inlet and outlet pipes on the existing boxes or send your existing exhausts to Carnewal who modify the internals and both of these would give a slightly louder/deeper sound possibly without the need to change the 'cats".

Suggestion
You are probably best to listen to a few cars with different aftermarket exhausts if you are going to change the boxes.
Replace tone and timbre as the revs rise, throttle dependent

Suggestion
The PSE is one of the better ones, as you get a changing tone and timbre as the revs rise, throttle dependent.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is there a way of improving the exhaust sound without going down the sports exhaust route?
I have a 1998 996 tip.
If thats' the only option, who does a good job and what sort of money am i looking at?
Based in Herts.

Alternatively, yes, there's plenty of replacment exhaust boxes which will make the sound louder etc., including some with a switchable system that you can move between loud/quiet depending on your mood/surroundings.
You are probably best to listen to a few cars with different aftermarket exhausts if you are going to change the boxes.
Its an interesting point you raise though... I have a PSE on my 4S, and actually like driving it in 'quiet' mode as I can hear more of the engine, drivetrain and induction. The PSE is one of the better ones, as you get a changing tone and timbre as the revs rise, throttle dependent. Some sports exhausts are dreadful; boomy and resonant.
People rave about the sound of the M3 CSL, but actually that is more about the induction noise than the exhaust.
As mentioned Gundo hack is the usual and cheapest option but listen to one thats been done first and listen to different sports boxes and 200 cell set ups as exhaust note ,tone and volume are very personal and what one loves another hates . also read reviews about cabin drone at certain revs with some exhausts. you need to decide if you want a bit more fruity or gates of hell opening volume and do you like a more deep bass sound or a more euro racing car scream sound . every person and every exhaust is slightly different :thumb:
I have a 1999, 3.4 C2 with the 'Gundo hack', I went for the moderate size one that apparently replicated the sports exhaust.
I consider myself an objective person, and have driven, and heard many high end cars, but I can honestly say none have sounded as good to me as my little 3.4 after the bypass.
The car will need some new bits in the near future which will likely mean I'll have to replace that section, but I will get it done again right away.
It is such a smooth sound, not over loud, or attention seeking, it is a thing of beauty
Exhaust sounds don't really seem to come across well over video, but this gives you an idea of the difference before and after, it is subtle, but effective.

The aftermarket intake hoses with resonator delete will add a bit of a louder, deeper note. I have this, but in conjunction with Miltek stainless sports silencers.

Personally I found added induction noise to be a better option, although I appreciate this is subjective. As the resonator delete can be done for free though, it's a great place to start. I used the top pff a plastic milk carton and it was a perfect fit.
I then spotted a K&N induction kit on eBay and snagged it for £80. Quite how they justify £400+ new though I have no idea? It fitted in just a few minutes and the sound is fantastic. I'm under no illusion that it offers any power increase though and have read it may even lose me a handful of HP? It's well worth it for the sound though.
Just Google welders locally to you.. I'm sure you will find someone fairly easily
The guy I used had never done it before but was an excellent welder.. I explained what I was after and gave him photos.. £140 and a few days later the job was done.
