Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion · Original poster

Took your advice, and went to local independent, very helpful, the suggestion is that it is likely to be a sensor, although they made some tests that indicate that it may be working, and therefore could point to a controller, as not certain they suggest the cheapest option would be to replace the sensor and then if not cured worry some more.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

They asked a contact of theirs at a Porsche main agent and had a reply saying that in all his many years experience, he had seen it only once before, and cured it by replacing the ECU ( at this point my BP went up as this is v expensive ).

POST 2Original post

Might be better to post this sort of question on the 996 Forum. [ ] [ ] The workshop manual says: After-running of engine compartment fan If the ignition is switched off and the engine compartment temperature is more than 60°C, the DME control module remains in readiness for another 20 minutes. During this time, the engine compartment temperature is retrieved every 10 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is >85°C, the engine compartment fan is switched on for 20 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is still >85°C after this time, the fan remains on for a further 30 seconds.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Firstly, sorry for submiting to wrong section. I have read what is said in the handbook, but the fan just runs for up to 10 minutes, v.odd ..... Anyone any experience in this ? Image

POST 5Original post

It was a rare occurrence for the engine compartment fan to come on with my C2. Only when it was extremely hot. If yours is coming on when it is barely warm, I would suspect that the engine compartment temperature sensor may be faulty. The Porsche Tester will display the engine compartment temperature, so should tell you if the sensor is mis-reading. Perhaps take it to an independent and see what it reveals. Edit: The engine compartment temperature sensor is item 2 on the diagram:

POST 7Original post

I have a similar problem on my 997C2S. Did you get this sorted and if so how ? I'm with you on the continuing worry... JFK

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Took car to my local independent, who changed the Sender / Sensor, made no difference. Their combined brains are somewhat stumped, as all other parameters appear to stack up. They asked a contact of theirs at a Porsche main agent and had a reply saying that in all his many years experience, he had seen it only once before, and cured it by replacing the ECU ( at this point my BP went up as this is v expensive ). Since leaving the Independent, the car has not behaved in the silly fashion with the fan acting correctly, Perhaps a Dry connection or something. I am just going to live with it a few more days to see if the fault has "gone away". In the independents favoour, they returned the sensor to stock and didnt charge me for it and although having spent several hours investigating only charged me for ONE hours Labour .... All credit to them. If you hear a whirr next time Im on line then you know the fault has returned. Image

POST 9Original post

997 have had a workshop campaign to disable the slow speed operation of the engine fan. For what reason, don't know!
