All of the front arms and bushes were replaced a couple of years ago but the springs, shocks and top mounts are original.

It's had those bits replaced before but perhaps cheap aftermarket bits were used and they've not lasted long.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all I've got a 98 C2 with just under 70k miles. All of the front arms and bushes were replaced a couple of years ago but the springs, shocks and top mounts are original. The car drives fine, but has developed a knocking sound when going over even the slightest bumps. It can also be felt through the steering wheel, almost as though something has become a bit loose. Weirdly it only happens when I have been driving the car for 40+ minutes and gets worse the hotter the car is. I took the car to Northway Porsche and they couldn't find anything wrong with the suspension at all (I initially thought it might be top mounts). I'm not sure if it will be harder for a garage to diagnose unless the car is being worked on while it's still hot. Has anyone had a similar experience or know what might cause the issue? I have noticed it started happening after I had new refurbished wheels fitted and took the car for a wheel alignment but I'm not sure if it would be related to that at all. Thanks

POST 2Original post

Yes, it's the inner track rod end. As they warm up with friction of movement, they expand and seize a little causing the noise and that's why you feel it in the steering.

POST 3Original post

I had a similar sounding problem... turned out to be the N/S front 'tuning fork' arm, diagnosed by Chris at Center Gravity who recognised the noise during a road test. Interestingly it felt fine, no play on inspection but plainly the ball joint was making a noise when warm, and the new one felt much more smooth. Dead easy to fit and not expensive. Just thought worth flagging in case these weren't changed in the work you've had done.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the replies. It's had those bits replaced before but perhaps cheap aftermarket bits were used and they've not lasted long. It's just a shame the garage didn't actually diagnose the issue which I'd asked them to look at! Time to take it to another garage then by the sound of it.

POST 5Original post

My similar symptom was also the tuning fork :thumb:

POST 6Original post

Manufacturing defects are not unknown in any component. Good timing as I have a similar noise only noticeable (sound and feel through the steering wheel) at slow speed on bumpy surfaces. Chris at Centre Gravity has a cobbled street on his test route to specifically identify the problem.
