Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
That possibly being the case, it might be worth starting at the end of it all and checking your wheel nuts are still tight..?
Leading evidence: 'Check wheel nuts are still tight' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check wheel nuts are still tight' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Having finally got the car driving exactly how I wanted to I got a bit over enthusiastic at Anglesey Monday.
On the drive home I noticed the fuel pump whining constantly and some new slack with a rattle/chatter somewhere in the drive chain.
Q1. I've ordered a new pump, but if it was fuel surge that killed it, are there any tips to avoid it happening again?
Q2. Any common culprits in the drive chain I should be focusing my attention on? I guess there aren't that many 4wd 996's that are tracked regularly so it's hard to find data.
Other than this the car was outstanding, brakes wouldn't let up at all, grip was neck braking and engine stayed as cool as a cucumber
I tracked my C4 with no issues. I was always really impressed with it, and in particular how tail happy it was! I certainly didn't 'feel" 4wd.
My best guess for your drive drain slack would be to look at the engine mounts - but that's based on posts, not experience.
I claim ZERO expertise, though talk of drive chain or drive drain causes me to think we are discussing drive TRAIN...? That possibly being the case, it might be worth starting at the end of it all and checking your wheel nuts are still tight..? As for the fuel pump, again zero involvement, but I thought it might run at a constant pressure against a regulator which might be set to provide an ideal spray pattern at the injectors, anything over that ideal pressure being dumped back to tank...? IF that might be the case then your day at the track may not have increased the fuel pumps duty cycle in any way...?
Of course I could have that all wrong, happy to be educated otherwise.. :?:
Drive train terminology accepted. My understanding of the fuelling system is the same, which is why I wondered if surge could be the reason. I couldn't think why it would work any harder on track, but it seems a mighty coincidence that the fuel pump should start whining on the way home from the track.
The only other thought I had was that the fuel I picked up at the circuit might have had some contamination or an additive that the pump didn't like.
Update on the drive 'train' noises. It seems and I've had a second opinion that the sound isn't coming from the gearbox. I can at rest go from reverse to 1st and blip the clutch with no sound or feeling of slack. It still engages smoothly into all the gears and there's no high pitch whine. It's only once rolling that you can hear any whine and that can be interrupted by bumps in the road on a light throttle or by coming on and off the throttle.. therefore I'm focusing my attention on the front diff or prop shaft
