Was pulling away from a light other day and went I shifted into 2nd it engine raved up but there was no
drive or power.Like I was in neutral. Im pretty sure had it in gear, pulled it out and put back in gear and no problems rest of day.Ive read that the
986
and some 2005 987,s had issues but
Porsche
made some changes I believe in 2006 to
solve the issues apparently. (or so I read) Fluid it not that old and I have the Function First kits installed. It shifts
great. I haven't read 1 post yet on 06 and up
Boxster
/Caymen with this issue. I have approx 90k on car.All original.
Thx for any feedback
I'd suspect cables first, before assuming the transmission itself.
It's possible, with an assistant, to get under the car and compare the range of motion on the shift cable VS the actual potential lever-travel on the transmission. In other words, disconnect the cable from the transmission lever and see if it wants/needs to travel beyond what the cable is allowing or forcing. The oem cables can wear at the connector itself, as well as the cable developing friction internally.

Great idea. I installed the Function First kits myself last year. I did u the Green
Porsche
Alignment tool to set cables in neutral when it was apart. It may just need another adjustment if tgdd Ed cables have stretched a little possibly. They are original with 90k
The 2nd gear issue usually appears as grinding and not staying in gear. I replaced the trans on my 05
Boxster
with a used 06
Cayman
one. I had about 135k on my car when I swapped them out.
There is a fix that requires opening up the transmission.
Lesmurray, I just got off the ph with a well respected and knowledgable Performance shop in the US that sells
kits for the older
986
Boxster
. He advised me that the part does not fit the newer 987 as
Porsche
changed things
at some point between the
986
and 987. If the issue persists and the alignment and cables check out then the tranny has to come out and certain parts can be sent to him to modify.Porsch does not sell parts to rebuild this tranny for some strange reason. You did well getting 135k before needing a new tranny. At what point or mileage did u notice the 2nd gear grind and slipping out of gear issue? I have looked pretty hard at everything on the net regarding this issue and not much out there on 2006 and newer
Caymans
and
Boxster
with 6 speed trannys having issues. Maybe its the higher mileage cars. I purchased mine at approx 70000 kilometres and it had 2 previous owners. They may not have been great at driving stick and caused pre mature wear. Mine ws a US car and cant get any service history other than when its been in Canada.
Call California Motorsports (CMS). They do 987 Getrag gearbox repairs and rebuilds.

Worth noting on an article I read from Hartech in the UK. Is that just adjusting the stops will allow the shifter lever to go further into the gate and not spring back out.Apparently there is a spring that lets the shifter lever follow thru to the ending point in the gate to make it feel like the shifter wants to go the last bit off travel by itself. Gives the driver a great feel when shifting. But when things start to wear and u dont force the shift and hold to the end of the gate it will allow the shifter to basically spring back and out of the gate. Not sure were the stops are located and how to adjust but sounds reasonable. They stated after much investigation they found that many did not need tranny work and this simple adjustment solved the issue. Anyone read that yet.
Exactly!
I'm rooting for you to find this is all that you are experiencing.
