I use it with my iphone so now i have access to all my playlists and i also using when on a phone call.

I think adding the touch screen really updates the car, id recommend pioneer if you go that route.

To really take it to the next level though, you'll need to change the speakers and amp.

Any suggestions for enhancing the sound system in a 99 996? I want to add satellite radio and I-Pod port. I did speak with an audio store today and they insist I must upgrade the receiver, suggested a Pioneer unit and add a Kenwood subwoofer, mount it behind drivers seat. No drilling or cutting necessary. Stock speakers are evidently sufficient.
I would like to cap the project at around $500.00. Any suggestions/insight is appreciated.

I have a 2001 coupe with the stock Becker unit ( think it is CDR 220) with HI FI stock stereo. I wanted to add my XM. I am happy with the Becker Aux input. Cannot remember the price but it was $50 or less including the keys to remove the head unit. Depends what you want to do. If it is just the XM radio, you can keep the cost down. The AUX input plugs into the back of the head unit in the same location as the CD changer. If you have this already added ( CD changer in your trunk- not the single CD for the head unit) then you will have to decide what you want, XM and a single CD or multiple CDs stored in the trunk.

PS: make sure you get your codes before pulling the head unit.
I think the speakers are the weak link in the system, but I certainly see the need to add an iPox/AUX in port, and possibly Bluetooth or Sirius. You should be able to accomplish this pretty easily with a new head unit, and the subwoofer will help. To really take it to the next level though, you'll need to change the speakers and amp.
Becker Auto Sound sells a cable and removal keys for around $50 that will remove your CD changer (you still have the single cd) and give you a cable that you can plug into anything with a headphone jack. I use it with my iphone so now i have access to all my playlists and i also using when on a phone call.
I added an alpine navi system/ front speakers and a rear subwoofer powered by an old 4 channel that i had sitting around and im really happy with it.

and like dennis said.. to really upgrade your sound quality your gonna have to get new speakers and amplifier. then again if you just want to add a little bump, throw the sub/amp in and call it good.
I went with a shallow mount sub so i could put it in the shelf behind the back seats.
