The problem is the buttons are not available indivdually from Prosche, which is why the dealer needs to replace the whole control unit at over $500 IIRC.
Leading evidence: 'buttons are not available indivdually' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). I don't use lotion, and the only product I've used on any of the surfaces is Meguiars #40.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently purchased an '
06 Cayman S
(YAY!) and the interior has some signs of wear. I don't know if this is common or not but the TEMP and Blower buttons on the climate control are peeling off. The buttons are painted black and peeling to expose the white in the back. Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions on what to do?
I've only seen this on my passenger door's window rocker switch. A quick swipe with a black
Sharpie
pen did a nice job of disguising the white plastic.
Sorry to hear this but it seems to be a common problem. I remember reading it's caused by lotion, sunscreen, etc.

Sounds like a lot of people got the same problem. I am going to go with the
sharpie
approach. I mean i cant make it worse than it already is. **Famous last words**
Nice.
Sharpie
does do a decent job, thanks. I may just look into getting a new unit later. In the mean time, you have to know what you are looking for if you want to find here i used the
sharpie
. Also, the ash tray was all scuffed up and i found that the part is the same color under the paint (or coating) so i just removed all the paint from it and put it back in place. I may look into just putting a wrap on the whole console. Thanks for the help guys.
Yep got it on my 07 and I barely touch climate control buttons not to mention I don't use sunscreen or other skin care products on my hands. That's
Porsche
BS. I might expect material failures like this in a sub $15K econo box, but in a
Porsche
or any car at this price point it's unacceptable. On second thought even an econo box shouldn't have this problem given the state of automotive technology.
Apparantly if you order a new AC module they come with plastic controls with no soft touch coating, so feel cheaper to the touch, bbut will not peal.
The soft touch finish throughout the
Porsche
annoys me and almost every piece has damage on mine. It's a good excuse to paint the centre console etc though
My temp know was peeling, so I took the car back to the dealer last week because my warranty is almost up. I thought I would take a shot and see if they would fix it under warranty. I was expecting a fight. But they replaced it without saying a word. I even got to keep the new Merc C rental for the weekend because the part came damaged and they had to reorder.
The same thing happened to me. I thought it was me just pressing too hard which damaged them. The dealer brought this up to me when my car was in for some other warranty work and they replaced it. I was very impressed since I thought it was something I caused and not something that was covered under warranty.
If the car is not under warranty, just have them stripped down and repainted in the colour of your choice.
I had the same problem.
Porsche
covered some of it under warranty, other pieces were covered by insurance during a break-in.
I'm still finding the back plastic pieces are suffering from the same disease. I don't use lotion, and the only product I've used on any of the surfaces is Meguiars #40. I'm no longer using Meguiars and seeing if it happens again on the new parts.
I tried using a
sharpie
but it's too shiny; doesn't blend in well so I ended up using a fine paint brush and some flat black paint, looks better than the
sharpie
did but still bugs me. How hard is it to change the buttons yourself?

I thought about taking mine out and having a look at plasti-dipping the levers, but just not sure how easy it is.
Replacement units have control arms that are a hard plastic, which looks cheaper but at least it didn't feel sticky and won't flake like mine! Outside of warranty
Porsche
Middle East refused to repalce mine and I believe sent a letter saying why it wouldn't be covered, but I never got it from the dealer....but will check again.
My 07 CS ha"d" the same issue with the temp and fan level. I took Krylon flat black spray can with a Q-tip as my brush and fixed the problem in two coats. Just dab it. The first coat does the job great, but at night time some light bleeds through a little that's the purpose for the 2nd coat.
Thanks

The knobs on my
2006 Cayman s
peeled like the skin of a sunburn surfer but it is Ok because I can not see them because my headliner in hanging in my eyes.
I recently found a solution for my
Cayman
, same problem with the peeling knobs... I´ve been using this solution for the last 3 months and I´m happy with the result. This is a European company but they do send to the U.S. as far as I can tell
www.climarepair.com
This is my A/C before and after I installed the climarepair kit:
Had the same problem on my 06. I picked up a AC unit on Ebay & transfered the knobs to my unit. Cost me about $80.00 & they were the hard plastic. Couldn't use the new control unit because it was auto climate control & wouldn't work properly.
clima repair sounds interesting I wonder how good the decal is?
...and how good the glue is, re. self adhesed or superglue-ish applied.
Anyone else use the clima repair here?
I am admittedly too lazy to take the knobs out, sounds like a pita.
I was going to try that rubber coating stuff...the name escapes me right now...
Haha, you're right it appears both of these "niggles" are universal to the first gen
Caymans
, I also replaced the visor, fortunately the replacement was a snap, and I 'only' paid $75 for nos from Guadette (sp)
Porsche
.
The decal is high quality 3M manufactured. It is self adhesed, very simple to install actually. There are a few folks in my city using this kit and no complaints so far. I´ve been using it for 11 weeks on a daily basis now and still strong.
Today I took another picture of my dash with the climarepair.com kit installed:
icsplz:
I´ll take tonight a picture of my dash with the lighted buttons and the climarepair.com kit, some asked if it lights up the icons at night and the answer is yes
Got it!
Sorry for the lack of artistic skills :roflmao:

I tried plastidip and while it may look like a great solution the first time you apply it, the truth is it will peel after a couple months (at least that´s what happened to me).
Cheers
