Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'll order a new grommet and pad it with foam if I can and give it some white silicon spray while replacing the filter.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

So I found this post - Mystery Left Rear Creaking Solved and I'm pretty sure the grommet in mine is making a rattling noise on certain speed/turns as it's coming directly from the location specified in the post. I'm just confused where the actual grommet and roll pin (part 6) is located. Is it inside the housing where the air filter is in or on the other side of the engine bay firewall? Took a screenshot of a YouTube video. Do I have to take off the foam to get to the area where the top arrow is pointing? Or take out the air filter to get to where the bottom arrow is pointing inside the air box?

POST 2Original post

I just replaced this grommet on my 987. The one you reference in your post is located at the red arrow you have identified. There is not a roll-pin that goes through it (the Porsche drawing is in error). To get the grommet off, you'll have to remove a 10-mm bolt from the firewall (bolt points towards front of car), and then remove the rubber intake hose from the airbox and wiggle the airbox around just enough to get that grommet replaced. Only two points of contact for the airbox, the grommet and the 10mm bolt; that's all that holds it in (of course, in addition to the tight fit, and rubber intake hose). FWIW - the roll-pin incorrectly identified in the Porsche print goes on the 10mm bolt as a spacer. It does not need replacing (ask me how I know - I ordered it all, and the roll pin took 3 weeks to be special ordered from Germany at about $1, and I threw it away because it wasn't needed!). Be prepared to slice your fingers open as well - that grommet plastic is brittle, and super sharp if broken. I left some blood there on my car in the airbox! Take the time now to put a new air cleaner in as well, since those are also a PITA...no sense in getting in that airbox more than needed. The foam your red arrow points to does not need removed. Hope this helps!

POST 3Original post

Thanks for the details, I'm looking to just put lithium silicon grease on it to prevent noise from rubbing occasionally. So as I understand, it sounds like the grommet and the 10mm bolt is inside the air box behind the air filter and not outside the air box below the foam?

POST 4Original post

The grommet is very cheap, and I found mine was broken. My advise....buy a new one and have it ready, even if you don't think you need it. When you take out that 10mm bolt, if the airbox flops around, the grommet needs replaced. The term 'grommet' is a bit misleading - it is actually a plastic type isolator. I hear grommet and think 'rubber'. Yes, you're exactly correct, both the 10mm bolt and the grommet is within the airbox.

POST 5Original post

Ok, I'm assuming then it's nestled inside where the air filter makes the connection. I have a new air filter to put in and wanted to get an idea of check out the grommet while in there. I'll order a new grommet and pad it with foam if I can and give it some white silicon spray while replacing the filter. Thanks!
