Happy I changed my allocation from gt3 to Dakar now!

Worth noting that all the, cough 'used', cars on the Porsche site seem to have buckets and cage fitted.

The issue is the above decal is for 991.2 not 992, so I would talk to the vendor

I had a 992 gts and for me, it did not work on atrocious UK roads.
No idea officially, but I'd be surprised if it was more than one or two per OPC - if that. Probably based upon requests. I think it's pretty niche - those with Ariel Nomads (that I know) are interested for example.

boo... lack of pts is becoming quite frustrating
What spec are you going for?

There are 3 new Decorative adhesive sets on the configurator which are pretty cool - do those tempt you?

I would do aftermarket Rothmans decals that have more authentic spelling than the Roughrouds (vegan version), e.g. this:
https://www.wrappshop.eu/collections/carrera/produ...

Not too worried about lack of Rothmans option. The paint colour scheme was cool but put off by Roughmans logo.
Can't make my mind up between the green (which will have the matching stitching as standard) - or go for white (possibly with the 74 decals).
Ideally I would have gone for Light Ivory (to match my 65 911) and no decals.

Not sure yet. Can't see me rallying in it anytime soon (I rally classic Porsche). However the car is so much more versatile than standard 911 so it opens up possibilities with snow, gravel and roads you wouldn't/couldnt take a normal 911. With the roof system and upcoming tent - could be a fun anywhere tourer rather than using a Cayenne or SUV.

Great to see a few guys ordering one. Can I ask what your going to use it for please, genuinely interested!
I intend on tracking mine to see if it is as good on tarmac as there saying, and a few mates do a bit of off roading so going to take it along with them and see just how "ambitious" I can be off road with it ! it will not be a garage queen!
Hoping that this type of car becomes more common.
If there is no intention to invest in the upkeep and maintenance of UK roads, then this type of performance model has huge appeal
I'm dying to see a press reviews of it. Hoping its a good one, and not a dog, unsure when it will happen though even Silverstone don't know when they are getting one for the experience days.

spot on.
I had a 992 gts and for me, it did not work on atrocious UK roads. Far too stiff. May have been a different proposition if living in mainland Europe.
I put name down on Dakar alas believe that i am not part of the happy few.
I genuinely believe that this kind of 'rally' inspired sportscars will be the next big thing in coming 10 years. Suspect if a commercial success they will expend it to a more available product.

I'm guessing your car had the Sport PASM which is fitted as standard to coupe GTS (but not Targa or convertible). This is also known as the -10mm option.
What is not so well publicised is that the spring rates are substantially stiffer (I believe 100% stiffer) for the Sport PASM vs PASM (as fitted to a normal 'S' and which can be optioned for free on a GTS).
The problem is that Porsche salespeople don't seem to know this and probably don't advise customers accordingly.
If you want a GTS that rides better on UK roads simply order it without Sport PASM.

Absolutely. Figured out soon after buying. Oh well… not waiting another 2 years for one!

why is the Dakar not a Heritage badged car?
Because there’s no history of Porsche making a 911 road car on raised suspension ? The 959 did come with suspension that could be raised but not to a genuine off road extent. Think that is probably the only one.
If Porsche follow this theme of having limited edition road cars based on their period race cars maybe we’ll get some proper wide body cars based on the 934/935 or a 992 Moby Dick !

Eh,what about the safari rally cars with great history.
I have no axe to grind.
just trying to get an idea of what Porsche are trying to achieve ( profits obviously), as Porsche are very slick with their products.
the whole recent 911 Dakar PR/press campaign had the original Dakar cars as the vision for the current Dakar.
my naive understanding of Heritage cars was that they are a pastiche of Porsches back catalogue.
Does anybody know when we are likely to see one in the UK?
I really need to see/touch/sit in one before I commit my spec for ordering…
Not much talk about this model on here though.
I am a bit perplexed there’s not many colours or options to choose from.
I must admit I’m finding it a little bit difficult to get excited about…. Are others the same?

I hear first cars should arrive June/July.
Yes colour choice isnt great, buy my24 cars should have PTS available.
I'm very exicited about it. Will be the perfect 911 for winter use and im looking forward to get my hands on one!

Me. I think it's awful. Just another bizarre attempt to give the Tubers and Flippers something to get excited about.
Come on Mumsn3t, where’s your sense of fun? I think it looks terrific and not unpractical either.
If it helps, I dislike the vloggers, TikTokkers and YouTubers as much as the next person, but if they’ve one use to society at all it’s if the potential publicity means that low volume and slightly nuts ideas like the Dakar get to production. Otherwise we’d be stuck with the major manufacturers only ever making things that would sell in volume and at a profit.

Hmmm
I hadn't thought about Tubers or Flippers in my choice of car, do you think I should consider this part of society....?
Maybe I should choose something that these guys aren't interested in......
What do you suggest Mumsn3t?
And what is awful about it?
I appreciate its different and not a normal 911, if such a thing exists..
I personally would use it for all winter driving, daily uses and on British roads and our weather it should excel..
I am just not excited about it yet like my touring for example...
I think it's a silly fad which is being sold solely based on rarity and hype. It reminds me of when I used to commute to work on a motorcycle. Without fail I'd see at least one GS rider with all the silly boxes and fog lamps....... on the north circular. Looked ridiculous and way over the top.
In terms of the car, I've had at least 14 911s', I love their proportions, the ride, the noise etc. This thing is just wrong proportionately and is ugly IMO.
Also, I can and do regularly track both my 911s. Wheres the nearest desert or frozen lake? A pointless eyesore used for bragging rights and flipping.
But I'm just a bloke on the Internet.

Me too, just another bloke on the Internet. But if we all agreed, it would be a lot less interesting.
Btw, I’m nine 911s behind you, but with every intention of closing the gap, albeit unlikely to do so in a Dakar. Because of the availability, that is, not the abysmal aerodynamics…
I actually quite like it. Although, full regalia wouldn’t be my choice. Prefer a subtle PTS.
Of course it is pretty nonsensical as a normal road car, even on the UK’s decrepit roads.
But, in fairness, no more so than a be-spoilered, caged and stickered GT3 or GT3RS, which is also intended for off road use.

I object to this statement, it is more sensible than Agri-Rover in town! :-)

Usable on any uk track....... unlike a dakar. There is no practical application for that car in the UK. It ticks one box and one box only "look at me I'm special ". That's the fundamental difference between the two.
Imo.

Equally as daft imo. But at least there's an application of use within a few miles. Wheres the nearest desert?
ChrisW. said:
And for the city, how about a nice Citroen C4 Cactus ?
No, no, no, to keep it in the family...
Citroen 2CV with flat-2 boxer motor, next to Boxster with flat-4 boxer and finally the 911 with flat-6 motor.

I think its a fantastic idea. Yes, there may not be any deserts nearby, but i'd imagine quite a few will be on the way to the middle east where there is no shortage of sand!!
As for the UK, its the perfect 911 to take on somewhere like the the NC500 in the middle of winter!

Whilst I love it, it's hard to see how it would be better than a much cheaper C4S on winter tyres on any normal road.
It really needs to be owned near vast sand dunes or long but not severe off road trails. So basically Australia, Middle-East and West/South USA, perhaps Spain?
That said 90% will simply languish in garages like all the other special editions.
Guyr said:

I take it you dont drive much in the UK?! That description seems to fit pretty much any road other than motorways in the UK.
I'm hard pushed to drive more than a couple of miles these days, without travelling over poorly surfaced roads which send a judder through my Macan!!
I’m warming to it.
Could be that the smaller wheels and tyres, and better suspension travel, improve the ride, comfort and NVH on compromised British roads.

The Sport Classic thing is ridiculous….it’s priced like it is because of the 997 but there are only 250 of them globally and it was a genuinely special thing to look at.
I’ve heard the line that the SC is unique because it’s effectively a RWD manual Turbo. Well that might be the case but you could have a GTS or a few other models as a RWD manual turbo too. It’s unique because it’s ludicrously expensive and has a duck tail. Which frankly looks daft on the 992’s fat arse.
I think the SC looks stunning, especially in SC Grey. I've done around 4K miles in them now and think its the ultimate Porsche grand tourer. Its very fast, very comfortable(glides over all but the worst surfaces), the interior is beautiful and it likes to wag its tail when pushing it.
Only dislike was the gearbox. I know the reason for 7 gears, but it was very easy to go from 6th to 3rd instead of 5th and 7th to 4th instead of 6th when driving around town. When pushing on it seemed to happen a lot less.

My OPC was originally told they were getting two, at last count they’d had eight….
I think orginally demand wasn't great globally so OPC's in the UK ended up getting more than they thought they would.
Great cars though. So much fun in bad conditions.
Road turned into a stream....no problem. Cuts through standing water at speed, like a hot knife through butter!

It's quite surprising Porsche didn't restrict numbers of the 992.1 Dakar drastically so when overs went mental they could pump the numbers for the 992.2 Dakar-same as they did with the Sports Classic.

You boys going to the Cotswold for Turkey Teeth and some new Hair ...... may as well have a butt lift at the same time .
Worth noting that all the, cough 'used', cars on the Porsche site seem to have buckets and cage fitted. Other than the black one, they are all plastered with stickers too.
Perhaps this, along with attempted overs, has stopped those who'd like one to use on a more daily basis from buying.

It's quite surprising Porsche didn't restrict numbers of the 992.1 Dakar drastically so when overs went mental they could pump the numbers for the 992.2 Dakar-same as they did with the Sports Classic.
Or release it as a regular model, the 992.2 Carrera X (bit like when the 991R became the GT3 Touring).

This is what I'm hoping for. One with rear seats

Rumour has it that 992 Dakar was an experiment to create new category. Now that the R&D spend is probably capitalised, 992.2 Carrera X makes perfect sense and would be an awesome outcome!

Nice!
Got his arse chewed off by a golf, then picked up some gravel rash!
Looks stiffer than I would of thought though
Is it me or are there just insane numbers of brand new Dakars for sale / being flipped? I thought there would have been more enthusiasm from owners to keep / use them. Nuts.

Attempted flipping. Would have a better chance of them selling if they didn't all come with the full bucket seats and roll cage.
I was in Austria the other week and saw three non stickered Dakars in the mountains. Was good to see them being used properly.
As a matter of interest, do you miss not having THAT engine ?
The wound-up turbo 3.0 gives a lot more torque from lower in the rev range, so should be more suitable ...
Complete waste of time car, if I wanted to drive fast off-road with dialed in handling and power would buy the forgotten Macan Turbo with Performance Pack, take it to Litchfield and with the £160k saved would buy a Ferrari F12. This car is only good for Porsche Shareholders, a total folly car and the market will crucify its value over next 5 years.

You’ll probably right. Porsche have such a history of misjudging the market and making cars that no one wants……not

Sure for the Gulf States, but in the UK, give me a break.. hey we got a lot of clients looking for a 911 for the UK pothole roads, and they want the Rothmans Colours on it as well, and £200k.. bus loads of them..
There appear to be 141 Dakars on the road in the UK according to How many Left.
That is quite rare in my opinion.
Not sure how accurate that is either.

If they are anything like Ferrari numbers they will be 25% under real numbers. UK get 9% allocation and they are making 2500, so imagine 220/225 cars, still pretty rare in uk compared to all the GT3 & Touring 992. Certainly a limited client base.
Are these still being delivered or has production stopped.
I see that there are 24 or so for sale anyone been watching the market to see if they are selling ?

This extraordinary one-off 911 marks the end of Porsche's Dakar cars

Thanks to those of you who replied to my random email about potential Dakar ownership a few weeks back. I took the plunge and so far am absolutely loving it. Thanks to the ever-changing Scottish weather, two pics from two subsequent days.

Phenomenal, and great colour choice.
I'd love one of these and I'd use it properly too
Yeah, salt is a concern, going to do some reading on the subject.
I'm sure it's been said before in reviews, but it's very freeing just being able to turn off up any old road, track without worrying about pot holes or the risk to bodywork! And those all terrain tyres are phenomenal in the snow.
I'd be very tempted if the did a 911X type thing with more comfort plus rear seats etc, we went away last weekend and had a wander round the new forest car park was a bit rutted and would have been great to take a 911, sadly means we always take a bigger (no fun) car.
Salt is the biggest problem faced by all cars, (apart from some cars owners of course).
Given the choice its why you buy a car from California not Philadelphia or the Home Counties and not Scotland.
If you buy an (older) car from a coastal town and put it up in the air you can usually see immediately salt corrosion on all the suspension arms/subframes and other widgets.
Cars from London generally fair much better in that regard.
Doesn't matter whether its a steel, aluminium or galvanised steel car, as soon as that misty spray comes off a salted road all the fasteners turn brown underneath unless protected.
My Tesla Model S exhibited fairly major corrosion issues after 3 years of use, and that is an aluminium monocoque. The body was OK however many of the fasteners, nuts and bolts were not ok.
Scottish cars are renown for corrosion as they have to salt the roads more frequently to stop the cars skidding off.
Interestingly really really cold countries are often OK as the roads are so cold there is no point in salting them, they run on studded tyres. My friend used to import old VW Beetles from the Artic Circle that were almost rot free. Everything below that latitude was rusted or looked after.
Its a difficult one for a long term ownership proposition, but there are ways around it.
