Quite easy really, just swapped the clutch from the low mielage second hard compressor I bought.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a noisy AC compressor, but my issue seems the opposite of what everyone else gets. With the AC on, the compressor is fairly quiet. As soon as I turn off the AC, it get a bad rumbling bearing sound, which will then quieten when I switch it on again. Am I missing something silly? If it was the bearings in the AC clutch, would it not get louder when the clutch was engaged, not quieter? :thumb: Youtube clip with my phone precariously balanced over the pulley! Starts with AC off, then after moving the phone, I go to switch it off and on and back off again. The noisier bits are AC on. The AC works fine too. Nice and cold. Condensers are nearly new and in good nick, both fans are working, rads are new and dual core ally. https://youtu.be/GCO33S8jFyA Cheers folks.

POST 2Original post

Sounds like the clutch plate on your electro magnetic clutch is loose. Hence it going quieter when all clamped together. Whip your airbox out and remove the belt and have a poke round.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep, good guess Alex. The 10mm retaining bolt wasn't exactly torqued up, it came undone without me even having to hold the pulley. Once off, the clutch material was half missing as seen in the photo and metal filings from the plate faces were scattered about, so it had allowed it to rattle about for a bit. The clutch is shot, but the compressor seems Ok with no movement. I've worked out the compressor is the same as lots of other cars such as a Zafira, but for now have bought a low mileage Denso entire compressor assembly with clutch for under £40 delivered from a Boxster, with the same 7SB16C Denso and 99612601152 Porsche part number. I'll probably nick the clutch off this and give that a try first. :thumb:

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well I fixed it. Quite easy really, just swapped the clutch from the low mielage second hard compressor I bought. I found the reason for failure and rattling too. The 10mm bolt which holds the outer plate on the pulley clutch had a washer under it on my car. I noticed the replacement had the washer the other side of the outer plate, so between the inner edge of the plate and the compressor drive spline. With mine being the wrong side, the plates would be nearer together when the AC was off and the magnetic clutch coils not on to attract the plates together. This was enough for them to rattle and wear the clutch. Another classy job from the East Anglian independent specialist who looked after it before I owned it.
