Recently I replaced my AOS, coils and plugs. What I didn't do was remove and clean my entire intake until today. Turns out I still had a lot of residual oil in there. For some reason after I changed my AOS I thought it would just clean out as I drove, but it didn't. I got some rough running and the classic cylinder 1 misfire code.
After reading some posts here I decided it would be best if I tear apart my entire intake. While I was in there I figured now was a good time to replace my starter (get the wheezing solenoid not retracting every 5 to 10 starts) and get a good cleaning on the old MAF sensor.
One of the most alarming moments of my experimental surgery happened when I pulled the out the sections between the intakes. They both have this flap in the middle that runs out to what I thought was a cable. To my surprise and relief I quickly realized it was a tiny vacuum line, but then I had no idea where to plug them in. So I searched for a good long while and I found the places where they went. If this happens to you I made a diagram to help.
I found that the starter install was pretty easy. You do need a super long 3/8th ratchet extension and you need to thread it through the front of the engine to get to the bottom starter bolt, but that was the only slightly tricky part.
The truly hardest part was getting the whole intake back in and straight. It's pretty tight in there and a lot of things have to slot together. After a very good cleaning of all parts with simple green and MAF cleaner I got it all back together.
I even got to use my cool new clamping pliers. I highly recommend these things.
Took it for a test drive and the traction control said it was off, then quickly cleared and it was OK. The car ran super great once the MAF was cleaned and every bit of oil was removed from the manifold.
I got a new Porsche! (not really it's 15 years old)
They are pretty cool looking pliers, but can I ask?
(I'm a bit of a
Porsche
newbie, obviously)
I've been ALL OVER my recently acquired
987.1
and have addressed every single little flaw I could find. I too get that feeling you get when you fix something and the
next
drive is like a new car.

snakebitten, what are you asking? If it is about the pliers watch this
nice work cleaning everything up mainsoda.... the intakes do get a bit oily over time.
good work on detecting the symptoms of a sticky starter too!
Thanks! After I watched this video I knew I needed a new starter.
Yes, sorry for the confusion. Cool tool. Just wanted to learn. Thanks
