I notice them less and less here in Maryland as old pumps get replaced with new ones.
Leading evidence: 'Replace with new ones' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill completely at least' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I've also found that holding the back of the handle up let's the tank fill completely at least on pumps without vapor recovery.

Suggestion
I've only gotten it to fill completely once out of maybe 6 tries.

I was terrified by the sound of the tank filling rapidly and utterly convinced that it was not going to stop...and that I would have diesel everywhere...

I've been running into the same problem with my CS as well.

i have found that i have little to no issue if i do not push the handle in all the way(just to where it will naturally stay in the tank without holding the handle) and set the filler on the fastest dispenser notch.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The Porsche shim didn't help the premature shut off issue on my car.
I've had this car for a week now and been driving a lot. Every time I try to refuel, the pump auto shuts off before the tank is full...
Happens at different locations and different pumps. It's pretty annoying to say the least.
Sometimes its so bad that it shuts off every 3 seconds and I just stop refueling.
I've only gotten it to fill completely once out of maybe 6 tries.
Anyone experience this and is there a trick to it?
Your gas tank vent must be blocked. It should be a small pipe connect to that little hole inside your gas input and it should run down, through a small hole, out of your car. Sometime in slipped inside so just route it through the hole and make sure there is no kinks..
Some pumps are more sensitive than others. But giantkiller is correct, invert the nozzle 180 degrees and the "problem" goes away.
*His picture seem to be a mirrored as the shot appears to show his fuel filler
cap
on the left side of the vehicle. Hmmm....
Got it. Will try that method
next
time!
The car is still under new car warranty so I will talk to them about it when I take it in to get the sport design steering wheel installed.
Thanks!
I have the same problem with my 07 CS in Southern California. First few times I filled up I drove away and noticed I only had around 3/4 tank. My other cars I push down on the pump handle as a fuel full speed until it stops. On the croc i discovered I need to lift up a little and only pull the trigger half way to get that last 1/4 of the tank full.
When I lived in San Diego I found the vapor capture pump handles amusing and irritating. Amusing in that a gas station still smelled like one making me wonder just how much vapor was really captured. Irritating in that the vapor capture collar would invariably have some liquid fuel in them which would dump down the side of the car or bike tank. This necessitated a rag to catch the spill until the collar was sealed to the filler neck. Of course the fuel wetted rag just added to the station ambiance making wonder just how effective the whole system was against the extra cost and hassle.
I've also found that holding the back of the handle up let's the tank fill completely at least on pumps without vapor recovery. Wonder if there's a bend in the tank filler tube that causes extra back pressure when the handle is left to hang and lifting or inverting the handle gives a straighter shot into the tank lowering the back pressure.
Be wary of using low flow rates to fill. Sometimes the auto shutoff doesn't work.
The Porsche shim didn't help the premature shut off issue on my car. But if it fixes having to hold the pump or inverting it - then it was worth it. Will report as I get more fillups.
Guys,
I never had the problem then one day I did. For a year I had to put up with this even though the dealer could not fix it. After some convincing they had a second attempt. Guess what? The air breather hose was kinked in situ but not kinked on removal and inspection.
Bingo, all fixed!
One year of click click click. -not missing that!
I love how some posts go off on a completely different direction than the original intent, and I plan go off to follow this path as well. is it possible that pic is from a UK car? isn't everything reversed or just the steering wheel?
Good news, those annoying vapor suppressant rubber boots are slowing being phased out in most states. They were initially intended for states with high emission standards like California, but eventually found their way elsewhere. I notice them less and less here in Maryland as old pumps get replaced with new ones.

Living in SoCal, I have noticed this on my 2006 CS intermittently. I think it has a lot to do with the control devices on the pumps themselves. Sometimes when I get that person on another pump who repeatedly pulls the pump lever
after it has already stopped
(*clack* *clack* *clack* *clack* *clack* over and over) the pressure variance causes the lever to release on my pump as well.
I think it is poor pump technology coupled with emissions control devices. Having driven to CO, NV and AZ where they don't have these devices I have no issues filling up.
i've had the same issue on my '10
boxster
in CA. i have found that i have little to no issue if i do not push the handle in all the way(just to where it will naturally stay in the tank without holding the handle) and set the filler on the fastest dispenser notch. if i put the handle in as far as it will go and/or use the slow setting, mine keeps clicking off like yours.
I have had intermittent issues with all three of my 987s.
My 335d is a different story. No boot on the diesel nozzle.
I was terrified by the sound of the tank filling rapidly and utterly convinced that it was not going to stop...and that I would have diesel everywhere...
But the auto shut-off works perfectly. LOL.
Funny how we get used to things like boots on nozzles and traction control...and think that the world needs them to continue spinning around the sun.
I just bought my
cayman
and the previous owner told me he had the dealer fit the gas collar and it allows you to fill at 45 degree angle, works 90% of the time.
also DO NOT top it off, modern cars have charcoal canisters that over time if you "top up" will send the gas through the bypass valve and it won't last as long.
