The commonly available double din install kit was in my humble opinion, not only incomplete, but it didn't match the 996.2 cupholder contour and was generally woeful in the way it fitted around the Kenwood DMX8020 head unit.

Long story short - after trying to make the stock optical amp work with an RCA to optical converter, I finally admitted defeat and just installed a Kenwood X802-5 amp which is a similar size to the stock amp and fits in the same place.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Wow! Kudos to you…this is the best compilation I have seen yet and love the detail!

POST 5Original post

Great DIY instructable. Thank you for the work and dedication that went into putting all this together which now makes yet another great addition to the community.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm happy to hear the write up might be useful. The real test will be one of you successfully completing the process. Please let me know when you have. Over the last 9 months of 996 ownership I have tackled a few other projects which I might share in a similar way: - Repair of 996.2 cup holder including 3D print file for the quadrant gear that slides the fascia - Installation of double din Kenwood DMX8020 head unit including 3D print files for all the mounting parts, fascia and rear support cradle. The commonly available double din install kit was in my humble opinion, not only incomplete, but it didn't match the 996.2 cupholder contour and was generally woeful in the way it fitted around the Kenwood DMX8020 head unit. - there are also some other 3D printed parts I've made but can't remember right now... Let me know if these are of interest. Regards Simon.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here is a photo of the double din install on the Kenwood DMX8020. I designed the fascia so it covers the Kenwwod unit right up to the edges of the screen and buttons, with the intent that it would look more OEM. This is the second itteration. I have plans for a third with some minor improvements such as how to do a better job of the factory-looking Porsche script so it looks like the Becker unit. So far out of plain old PLA, the 3D printed fascia has survived a few Brisbane days of heat....

POST 9Original post

Can you repost with the picture please. I'm curious to see this.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This time with the photo... In the compartment below you can see the IPhone cradle. My phone simply slides into that face down (for safety) and connects to the lightning jack at the back. The cradle is also 3D printed and just held in with double sided tape at the back. This all works really well. The Porsche badge on the screen is much better than the photo suggests.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Other 3D printed parts I've made for the 996 include gear shift bushes. I wasn't keen on the short shift option so these just tightened up most of the slop and so far appear to be working fine. I have also made an adapter for the stereo amplifier plug. Long story short - after trying to make the stock optical amp work with an RCA to optical converter, I finally admitted defeat and just installed a Kenwood X802-5 amp which is a similar size to the stock amp and fits in the same place. It is also 5 channel and runs all the stock speakers very well. I couldn't bring myself to cut the plug off the stock loom (do no harm), hence the adapter. I've made a few other captive nut-type gromets for the Frunk to replace missing ones. I think thats about it so far.... I should add that the double din head unit arrangement shown above only required a bit of spray putty, sanding then painting. Getting the right matt black and then matt clear was a challenge. Its close. Mk3 will be better.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 17837072

That looks great. Is your unit a DVD unit where the face slides down and out to allow you to load a DVD? I ask because your frame is very fitted to the head unit.

POST 13Original post

Hey I spy my arm in one of those pictures. Method 3 is the best way for a DIY in my opinion. It really wasn't bad, the worst part for me was trying to put back the arms back on the bottom of the dash area. Its disorienting to do it upside down with your body half hanging out of the car.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. The head unit is non-disc so no problems with clearance.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I agree about putting the arms back on underneath. Quite disorientating. Thanks for the pic! All mine were dark blue and hard to see detail.

POST 17Original post

I did this repair a few weeks back using these instructions and they work perfectly. Thanks to the original poster for the write up.
