I just changed my oil (6 months after the last change), but when I went for a drive the engine has developed a ticking through ~3000–4000RPM.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I just changed my oil (6 months after the last change), but when I went for a drive the engine has developed a ticking through ~3000–4000RPM. I have my firewall insulation out at the moment, so I heard the sound of the engine clearly before and after the change. The noise isn't there at idle at all and, though I only explored over 4000rpm a few times on the drive, does die down from thereon. A couple of "notable" bits about the change; Moved from a 10W-40 semi-synthetic oil, put in by my specialist, to a 5W-40 fully synthetic/ester oil ( Millers Nanodrive CFS ) I did not fully pre-fill the new filter, though I did put 100ml or so in Neither the old filter, nor the old oil, had any obvious particulates/metal in them The engine oil readout on startup was over the "max" line, though I measured what I took out/put back in equally (including the filter oil) No warning lights came up at startup nor during the drive Has anybody experienced this? Does anybody have any advice? (especially if it's "don't worry about it")

POST 2Original post

The engine oil readout on startup was over the "max" line , though I measured what I took out/put back in equally (including the filter oil) Before you do anything else, correct this first and report back. Also anytime in the future leave it a half quart down and top as necessary, it's easier than sneaking a little out past the drain plug to lower the level. Too much oil in a car is not good either, it's tough on the seals among other things.

POST 3Original post

Checked again now the engine is cool post-drive. The oil level is now at the max line (at 3/3 rather than the ideal 2/3). Nonetheless under, though.
