Still have a small parasitic drain but I believe there is a GPS tracker installed somewhere in the dash.

Ive replaced the ignition switch but I still have constant power on the accessory/switched line when measured at the radio connector.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a new to me 2000 996 that seems to have a parasitic power draw I cant seem to pin down. One of the issues Ive come across is that the radio does not shut off when the ignition is switched off. Ive replaced the ignition switch but I still have constant power on the accessory/switched line when measured at the radio connector. Both the constant and accessory line supply 12v regardless of ignition switch position. Any suggestions on where to start looking for this troublesome issue? Thanks

POST 2Original post

The mechanical part of the ignition lock is broken or jammed. When you pull they key out the mechanism should give a big, loud bang and I'd bet yours is not doing that.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Definitely not. In fact the steering wheel doesn’t seem to lock when the key is out and there is no chime if I open the door with the key in the ignition. I’ve ordered a new ignition lock, would this solve this problem? Probably not but worth a try. The whole locking mechanism was upgraded due to it becoming sticky and not locking the steering wheel. That seems to be your problem.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry- thats what I meant. I plan to replace the entire mechanism.

POST 5Original post

If the ignition switch fix doesnt solve the issue, if the radio is not stock, its possible someone wired the power that way on purpose or on accident.

POST 6Original post

The electric part of the ignition switch is probably ok. The actual lock mechanism is broken. It's not recognizing when the key is pulled out of the lock and this prevents the car from powering down. The original lock mechanism is superceeded to a new part that's more reliable.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This was it. Replaced the steering lock mechanism and this partially solved the problems. Still have a small parasitic drain but I believe there is a GPS tracker installed somewhere in the dash. Thanks!
