Leading evidence: 'will be worse' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'will be worse' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace modes or deactivating the' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
It is strange for me to think about spending $3k+ for a mod that only changes the sound and doesn't give any performance upgrade - but there's nearly unanimous that it's worthwhile.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 2013
Carrera
S without
PSE
and I'm thinking of adding it. I have read 100+ posts but can't find a direct answer if it's any louder inside the car when switched on.
Anyone have any input?
Thanks - so when off it's similar volume but deeper than stock, and when on is it noticeably louder inside the car?
I don't want to spend $3,000+ just to entertain my neighbors and random people - I want to hear it [emoji33][emoji41]

Read this
thread.
It explains it. The valves are already there. PSE OFF is deeper than no PSE, not louder, deeper.
PSE off at idle, then turn on, goes deeper note, not louder, deeper. However, when driving, there are three levels of sound, on, sport, and sport +. Each one is more aggressive, particularly with the burbles and crackles when lifting. In sport +, windows open, you cannot have a normal conversation in the car at WOT. So yeah, you can hear it. Its also depends upon a lot of things as noted in that article. The temperature matters, how hot the exhaust is matters, all variables. Do not use it in residential areas. No need.
I find it adds a distinct whine or wail to the normal wail. However, lifting in sport + IMO is just stupid with the artificial pops, its like playing boy racer and you are 5 years old. Vroom
But WOT is cool.
WOT is Wide Open Throttle
Lifting would be at WOT and then lift ... let the gas off. artificial overrun from the
ecu
faking or emulating a race car dumping raw fuel into the exhaust. you can tell when he lfts from the burbles.
Chow explained it perfectly. I had
PSE
on my 997S and although expensive, it was easily worth the outlay to me.
Some people don't like the burbles that Chow references, since it is "artificial". If you have ever driven a race car, you'll hear the burbles all the time. The reason is that for a race car to generate the most HP near redline, a significant overlap is required between the exhaust and intake valve openings. This overlap will generate burbles at low RPMs, and on occasion a flame can even be seen coming out of the exhaust pipe.
As far as
PSE
is concerned you'll be able to modulate the amount of burbles: quick shifts will result in minimal burbles and conversely quick acceleration and then letting off the throttle will maximize the sound. Also, a heated exhaust pipe is required to create the burbles. So it will be relatively quiet for around five minutes or so.
A fair warning about
PSE
. I had it installed in my
Boxster S
so the 3.4 not the 3.8 L six which I have heard in person and has a much deeper sound.
PSE
on, sport off, the sound is to die for. Absolutely amazing with no backfiring sounds, pops and gurgles. I absolutely love it. But it has ensured that I almost never use the sport mode with
PSE
on. The backfiring sounds are juvenile and quite annoying in a residential neighborhood. I can't imagine what it would be in sport + because I don't have SC. Basically, if I get
PSE
on another
Porsche
, I would not get SC. I am a manual guys so I don't care for SC.
Another thing to consider, there is a fair amount of resonance at low rpms which causes a booming sound in the cabin below 3000 rpms. So if you are cruising below 3000 rpms,
PSE
on or not, the deep boom will can be very annoying which I suspect will be worse with the larger engine.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about droning. I do know it's subjective and some people pay money for that - I am not one.
I always drive in Sport (not Sport +) so that is something to think about.
I need to go to and listen to some cars with
PSE
before I do anything.

I will try to explain this the best way I can.
The car has a split personality. Turn
PSE
off and in normal mode, and to me its quiet. Some people might think its loud, but I find it quiet. It all depends upon what you are used to. Turn
PSE
on, put it in sport +, open the windows and roof, and you cannot talk in the car.
That about sums it up. This is not an accident. Some executives maybe want quiet but to drive a logo. Others want to let it wail. Your choice. But in no way is it as loud as a
GT3
. at 9K, that is an opera.
I think so, or more so, you have choices.
As to Anands point, I've always said the burbles are for the boy racers.
Wee look at me.
They are emulating a race car and customers want that sound. I find them ridiculous but hey, its your money, do as you please. Its while a WOT that it sings. And he's write about the fart cans. Some younger people love them, then again, I can remember glass pack mufflers. Whatever.
Glad I ignored the wife and paid for the £2000
PSE
option when spec'ing the car.....well worth it.
As for drone - yes this is noticeable over a non-
PSE
car in urban driving - small price to pay in my opinion.
I enjoy mine every time I drive it. It is louder inside in a really enjoyable visceral way. I keep my sunroof tilted up to let in even more sound. It's a beautiful thing!!
I have a 2012 991 CS and added
PSE
after the purchase. It is louder inside the car. I usually drive e in Sport mode, rarely Sport + and it is loud. The burbles are subjective, I like them but wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there. As far as drone, it does drone on the freeway and can get tiresome on long rides, especially in Sport mode. I find that if I leave
PSE
on and take Sport mode off, the droning is considerably less and does not bother me. Good luck with your decision.
It is strange for me to think about spending $3k+ for a mod that only changes the sound and doesn't give any performance upgrade - but there's nearly unanimous that it's worthwhile.
I'm going to be taking some 500 mile road trips with my wife and I know droning will make this experience a nightmare, so being able to reduce it by changing modes or deactivating the
PSE
is key.
If you had read this
thread
, in fact Porsche does say that for the 911 it creates an "
improved torque curve"
. Since HP=torque*RPM/5252, its impossible to not make more HP if the curve is improved. I see no similar claim for the 981. Further, the X51 kit includes the PSE if the car doesn't already have it. So while there are no direct words saying for a 991 that PSE "increases HP", there is indirect evidence it does.
I like the sport exhaust from
Porsche
because it can be turned off unlike other aftermarket systems. However, I think
Porsche
went overboard with the pops and gurgles. Some people like it but many don't. You can use sport mode and turn
PSE
off and the car sounds just like stock except slightly deeper in tone. Or you turn
PSE
on and turn sport mode off which gives a very pleasing, deep and rich tone to the sound. For long highway drives, I switch it off because the booming sound can get really tiring.
PSE
arrived today - now to wait 2 weeks until I can get it installed. Very surprised that it came with a whole new switch module and not just the exhaust button.
