I know all about Porsche's recommended service interval, and I'm sure that some people follow it, but figure those same people don't know an IMS from an RMS so they don't lose sleep.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys So, had a possibly not so great day today when changing oil. When I pulled the oil drain plug it was filled with a metallic sludge and spikey metal shavings! I pulled the oil filter and cut it open. More shavings. Not great... the long shaving here was on the rag, and I used the rag to clean up oil at the bottom of the filter housing. Shaving is magnetic. Does this qualify as "normal?" Some history: I bought the car Jan of 2014. I have driven it just over 10,000 miles since then. Last oil change was 5,300 miles ago, I know, I was a little overdue on this one. Too much work and too much got to me. The car had IMS Bearing replaced with LN Engineering, Rear Main Seal and Cluch replaced at 95,672 miles at House Automotive in Pasadena. Noise: Every now and then I have this short squeak/whine coming from general engine area. -The sound varies in length and only comes when that car goes from a stop to moving. -Clutch is always involved when the sound comes. -Sound comes at very random times. The car can be hot, cold whatever. It's can go months between the sound appearing or it can come multiple times during a drive. It's a sound that has had me somewhat worried, trying to figure out what and where it's from. But now that I have all these shavings, I'm getting more worried... Using Mobile 1 0W40 oil in Los Angeles. Thoughts?

POST 3Original post

The sludge wouldn't worry me but the magnetic shavings might....but even then not if there is only just one. Mobil 1 always worries mo...use better oil...and *don't* skip oil changes. They are dead easy and cheap even...a half hour and $100. wtf would you not follow the schedule? Still...calm down. You have a LNS bearing so the *big* one probably isn't going to hit you anytime soon. You have already said the noise happens when you use the clutch so probably your throwout bearing is a bit dry. The noise is nothing to worry about by the way you describe it. You sure that sliver is magnetic? Sometimes even a static charge will make it move. Was it stuck to your magnetic plug? I would stop worrying and start running it hard.

Excuse me? Porsche Maintenance Schedule, in case you don't know, says to replace oil every 15,000 miles. I change every 5,000. So pretty frequently. Three times more often than Porsche recommends. Granted, this time, because of misc work reasons, I went 300 miles over my usual.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 8794961

My bad - I didn't read your post closely enough to do the math, I just read you let it go too long so figured it was *way* too long.. clearly that isn't the case. I change mine every 10,000 kilometres...so 6,000 miles. I know all about Porsche's recommended service interval, and I'm sure that some people follow it, but figure those same people don't know an IMS from an RMS so they don't lose sleep. You on the other hand....are clearly informed enough to be worried, but I think your car is fine. I'd still use something better than Mobil 1 though. I know it was (is?) factory fill, but I'm guessing Mobil corp paid for that privilege. I've also heard that the retail bottles don't contain the good stuff, but who knows. Not much to do but drive it hard and keep cutting filters open man.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. Let's hope it is. Always worrying when you discover something new like this... Yes, I'm switching away from mobile 1 and going something thicker 10W40 or similar. And yes, I drive it hard, like it was built to do
