Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My car doesn't have it though (just been and double checked).
Leading evidence: 'Check )' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check )' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

So I took off the rear light, checked the bulb and the wiring.

I was nearly off on a tangent to check the fuse box wiring.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Last night I was doing checks on tyre pressure and lights etc and the rear LH fog light was t working. I had a memory of this being flagged on a previous NCT (Irish MOT). So I took off the rear light, checked the bulb and the wiring. All good but zero volts on the car loom.
So I searched the forum and low and behold there is a thread that mentions that the rear fog light is only powered on the drivers side from factory.
I wondered how I didn't know this and checked the owners manual - Nothing in it at all that I could see to say that it was one sided only.
I'm just posting this so it might be easier to find for others who search. I was nearly off on a tangent to check the fuse box wiring.
Which makes it slightly bizarre. Wiring and bulb present (for simplified production process), handbook that doesn't suggest it is only one sided... so how is anyone supposed to know or indeed show proof to someone that it's meant to be like that.
I note there is a relay referenced for US and Japan models in the fog light wiring. I haven't looked too closely but I wonder if the power to each side is determined by the relay or is it determined by the wiring loom. Mostly irrelevant as I won't be changing mine. I also know I have a spare fog light/ reverse light bulb in the LH fog light if I ever need it!
Not sure if it is the same on the 996, however, on some vehicles the fog light goes off when main beam is put on. Main beam no use when its foggy!
MOT testers have been know to fail cars for the fog light going off!
I'll check the 996 next time I'm out!
I think that might have been one of my posts when I was getting the car ready for it's UK MOT....just seemed so odd to have a bulb that received no power to it :dont know:
I had a look at the wiring diagram. I'm not fluent in Porsche wiring, but it looks like the looms from the rear footwells back (connectors X2/4 and X2/5) are pinned differently depending on LH And RH drive. The fog light wire is connected to a dead pin on one side I think.
Again not that I'll ever bother, but the solution seems to be repinning the wire at one of these plugs.
Ha, I've just been through that.
My car failed it's MOT for rear fogs not working. As neither side worked I thought it wouldn't be bulbs and almost ordered a headlight switch. Have you seen the price of those?!
Had a quick check online and found our cars only use the offside (U.K.) so pulled the light out. Bulb was fine but the pins in connector were a touch green with corrosion. Cleaned the pins and bingo, fog light working. I love a free fix.
Edit. Short answer has been covered. Fog needs to be on opposite side on LHD cars. Both bulbs present from factory as it's cheaper than handing them. Only the relevant side connected for each market.
Handbook may have that tech (infact my gen 1 handbook also states the same). My car doesn't have it though (just been and double checked). High beam activated - All fogs stay on. There is a disclaimer at the bottom of the page stating cars may vary country to country depending on local law.
