The best all-round tyres I've had on a tail-happy RWD in the past (not a 911) was the original Michelin Pilot Sport, replaced by MPS2, but I can't get MPS2s in the correct size for my car, so I went for Continentals.

I believe that the 911 obeys the laws of physics like every other car, and so I fit the best tyres as tested by independent experts, not the tyres that Porsche have done a deal with the tyre manufacturers to produce.

Suggestion

However, in the recent EVO tyre-tests, the Vredestein Sessantas and Goodyear Asymmetrics and Continental ContiSport3 were marked ahead of MPS2s, so I've got the Sessantas on the front, and will be replacing my current n-rated Continentals with Sessantas on the rear.

If I were you, I'd be putting Michelin Pilot Sport 2 on the rear, and replacing the fronts with the same when they need it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Say for example if you currently had four pirelli N3 tyres on your car, and the rears needed replacing yet could get either Michelin, Continental or Bridgestone rear tyes when the front two pirellis were still like new, would you have them and mix the brands? In other words, can I mix 2 new rear Michelin/Continental/Bridgestone N3 tyres with 2 existing Pirelli N3 front tyres? And if so....which of the 3 brands Michelin/Continental/Bridgestone would you go for?? Cheers in advance.

POST 2Original post

n-rating doesn't work like that - each evolution of EACH tyre gets the next number in the sequence. So the latest Michelin might be at N3, Pirelli at N5, Bridgestone at N2 etc etc. What Porsche recommend is that you keep the same tyres everywhere, make, tyre and n-rating. I don't follow that recommendation. If I were you, I'd be putting Michelin Pilot Sport 2 on the rear, and replacing the fronts with the same when they need it. You (lucky boy) also have another issue - with AWD you should allegedly be aiming to keep tread-depths similar, to keep rolling circumference similar on all 4 wheels, to minimise strain on the drive-train - however, even from new, the rolling circ of (say) 225/40/18 and 295/30/18 is different, and then obviously the rears wear faster than the fronts, so.... just how important is it?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Orangecurry, thanks for the prompt reply. I have pirellis on the car as thats what it came with and on the previous service last december OPC flagged up that rears have low tread on them. Put it another way...are the michelins a better tyre than the Puirelli Assimetric? I have a friend who works for a tyre wholesaler and he can get me 2 rears @ 295.30.18 VERY cheap! And I need them! If I put the Michelin rears on I can swap to the same make fronts next year when the pirellis are dead?? I know about the front and rear rolling circumference differences, had the same issue with my previous 4WD Escort Cosworth of 13 years. It was easier on that tho as the fronts and rears were the same size. Anyone else run the Michelins? The Pirellis seem noisy but Ive alway been led to believe they were the best tyre. Discuss? What about the Bridgestone or Continental. What N number should I be getting for the rears then? Damn Porsches lol!

POST 4Original post

IME Pirellis are THE best tyre in the dry for maybe a 1000 miles. After that they feel 'awkward' and grip much less. They are never good in the wet, though they do break away progressively, which is nice. The best all-round tyres I've had on a tail-happy RWD in the past (not a 911) was the original Michelin Pilot Sport, replaced by MPS2, but I can't get MPS2s in the correct size for my car, so I went for Continentals. I have another set of rims, and on those I have Bridgestone S02 tyres (not S02a or S03). I find these are not so good as the Continentals when cold, but are excellent when warmed properly (i.e. for track-days) Popular discussions rate the tyres for the 911 in the following order:- MPS2 Continental SportContact2 Bridgestone S02 Cold Kippers Pirelli P-zero In your size of 295/30/18, on mytyres (assuming these are the latest tyres available today) you have MPS2 N2 for 289 GBP P-zero asimmetrico N5 for 202 GBP P-zero Rosso asimmetrico N3 for 202 GBP Bridgestone S02 A N3 238 GBP But I would be checking that the matching fronts are available in your size before purchase? If you can get MPS2 N2 cheaper than the above, I'd snatch your chaps hand off. (Edited for my misunderstanding) Then drive very carefully until you are familiar with the new handling characteristics of your car. Read on at your peril. I personally don't believe in N-rated tyres as the most important factor - if I have to choose (because of availabillity in a certain tyre size) between MPS1 n-rated and MPS2 non-n-rated, the more modern tyre will get my vote every time. However, in the recent EVO tyre-tests, the Vredestein Sessantas and Goodyear Asymmetrics and Continental ContiSport3 were marked ahead of MPS2s, so I've got the Sessantas on the front, and will be replacing my current n-rated Continentals with Sessantas on the rear. http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2007-evo-tyre-test.htm I believe that the 911 obeys the laws of physics like every other car, and so I fit the best tyres as tested by independent experts, not the tyres that Porsche have done a deal with the tyre manufacturers to produce.

Thanks again Orangecurry, can you please assume the role as my personal advisor as you are always most helpful. Michelins now duly ordered!
