Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

This happened to me ages ago after I washed the car, it ran really badly missfiring & sounding pretty lumpy.
Leading evidence: 'Run really badly missfiring & sounding pretty lumpy' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'coils, they say they split' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect battery' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Thank you, I will get it checked out, called JZ Machteck and they thought that it was probably the coils, they say they split with the cold wear and tear, said they are £32 plus vat each and may need to replace all 6.

Disconnecting the battery for a few minutes usually works.

Suggestion
The combination of broken lamda sensor and air flow meter also caused the engine to run roughly because the engine management computer was unable to figure out the correct air/fuel mixture due to the broken sensor.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have just started my car a 996 Carrera 4 Tiptronic and the emission control light started flashing, the engine was missfiring. I ran it for a few minutes and it cleared itself. Now the emission light is on continuously although the car seems to be running properly. Does this mean the fault has rectified itself and can now be driven to Porsche to be re-set or is their likely to be a problem?[/list]
This happened to me ages ago after I washed the car, it ran really badly missfiring & sounding pretty lumpy. It then sorted itself out but the light stayed on for a few days, seemed to go off after abit of heavy driving and did'nt come back again, so sorted itself in the end!
Split coil packs probably... Especially if the light first came on when wet?
Don't run it too long if it does misfire - you'll destroy the cats and fail the next MoT.
After driving home from OPC servicing where they replaced one of the Lamda sensors, i had the same light coming on for a couple of minutes and then disappear again. Immediately returned to the OPC and it actually was the air flow meter that was broken and had to be replaced. The combination of broken lamda sensor and air flow meter also caused the engine to run roughly because the engine management computer was unable to figure out the correct air/fuel mixture due to the broken sensor. as a result power was signficantly down (particularly at the top end) and engine misfired. so i'd have it checked out just to be safe. probably looking at around £400 for an air flow meter and £100 for a lambda sensor plus c. 3 hours of labour
Thank you, I will get it checked out, called JZ Machteck and they thought that it was probably the coils, they say they split with the cold wear and tear, said they are £32 plus vat each and may need to replace all 6. Also said that a diagnostic would show up what was wrong.
Thanks for the help and advice
