Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Yeh a lot of plated steel on bikes go furry in the winter, I replaced all my studs on my R1 because it looked aweful, not too much you can do about it, although that said, I've not seen it before on care wheel nuts.

On a related subject, does anyone know whether or not Porsche recommend lubricating the stud threads?
Recommend aluminium-based paste: are the steel studs aluminium coated

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've bought new wheel studs because the spacers on my original ones were heavily corroded to the point that they were breaking up!!! I searched for it on the forum, but didn't find anything, so thought I'd mention it. Has anyone else come across this issue?
I guess they are original studs, although I still wouldn't expect to see corrosion like that after only 7 years! Nice set of new studs now, so hopefully no worries..

I assume the plating has worn off and the whether and salt has got into them. If they are just furry it should just sand off and they will be sound underneath.
Ive got a few similar on my Turbo, told the wheel cleaner was to blame. Can I ask where you purchased the new ones, there seems to be many types and prices out there?

I also run a Golf GTi and note that VAG state explicitly that the studs should NOT be greased.

Porsche say:
"Always apply a thin coat of Optimoly TA (aluminium paste) on the thread of the wheel bolts, on the shank and between the bolt head bearing surface and spherical cap ring (under the head). Do not grease the spherical cap bearing surface of the wheel bolts that faces the wheel."
Interesting....thanks for that Richard.
In the past, I've normally used Copper Ease. Any idea why Porsche recommend an aluminium-based paste: are the steel studs aluminium coated? And, if they are, why are they corroding?
No doubt tubes of Optimoly TA are available at dealerships at a price greater than their mass equivalent in gold..!!

Just found this on a BMW motorcycle spares site:

£6.75+VAT for a 100gm tin of Otimoly TA compound.
