Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

However I do try to take it out and give it run upto temperature at least once every 2-3 weeks.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

i have to say i didn't do any more than talk to my indy and i've have had no further problems.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I own a 1999 996 cab which I currently have garaged for the winter. However I do try to take it out and give it run upto temperature at least once every 2-3 weeks. I have noticed that if it is left more than about 3 weeks when I start it there is this strange rather worrying noise that only lasts a few seconds and then disappears. The engine runs perfectly and uses virtually no oil. Mileage is 72K. Anyone any ideas? Mike

POST 2Original post

What sort of noise is it and where does it seem to be coming from?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its really difficult to describe. Its sounds as if its coming from the area of the engine and sounds a bit like a loud whirr which lasts for no more than 2-3 secs. There is no problem with oil pressure which is registering about 4.5-4.7 at cold start.

POST 4Original post

hi there i had what sounds like exactly the same problem on my 2000 C4 when i bought it 5 months ago. if you search under my name you should find my post. dave replied to mine too and mentioned an exhaust gas valve which could be to blame. i have to say i didn't do any more than talk to my indy and i've have had no further problems. only thing i do differently is hold the key in the turn over position slightly longer than i was originally. don't know if this helped or not?! interested to see what you find out about this!
