I have test drove both and do have a slight preference towards the GT3 and sometimes the Turbo might be the better option for me. I heard from someone in the Porsche club that his early 80's GT3RS is a lot more reliable that the 997 turbo as it has had engine problems. I know that the Turbo and GT3 do share some engine parts but in a different configuration.
My question for those that know and have 1st hand experience with one of both- what is more reliable- Turbo or GT3??
Other than the fact the turbo has more parts to theoretically fail, I doubt you'll find much difference in overall reliability; not enough diff to make it a buying decision.
What is an early 80s GT3RS? I've never heard of it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. What I'm familar with is that in the early 80s the 911SC was followed by the
Carrera
3.2 in 82 or 83. The
Carrera
3.2 ran through 89. Just curious.
With my limited background about the subject, I think it would be better if you refer to the year model of the GT3 and
911
turbo you are interested in buying. But IMHO since it is a Porsche, I never question reliability... I just follow my heart.
Just looked it up......my mistake.....he has a 73
911
RS as he told me there was only 500 made. When I told him I wanted a newer Turbo he said that if he was me that he would that the 98 Turbo at the dealership as it would be more reliable than the new ones which have engine problems.
2010 GT3 & 2008 or 2009 Turbo
96/97 turbos are fantastic cars but getting old enough that you WILL pay a bit in maintenance. Best looking cars Porsche ever made; I'm not biased
Im not aware of new Turbos being any less reliable than the older models. If I had the cash I'd get a new one in heartbeat; well, I'd wait a year because the 997.2 Turbo motor is new and unproven and Porsche does not have a good track record with first year of production engines. So, if it were me and I had to buy a gt3 or turbo today, from a reliability perspective, I would get the gt3. Note however, the gt3 has it's own potential engine problems, which it shares with all water cooled Turbos. However, it seems all the engine problems are rare enough to not be bothered by them.
I'd get whatever turbo turned me on the most and not worry about reliability quite so much.
