I am contemplating a low mileage 2002 C2 Coupe with manual transmission. A friend has had it since new. Even though he doesn't drive it anymore, he isn't ready to relinquish it; can't say as I blame him. In the meantime I am trying to educate myself as much as possible on what it will need in order to go strong for another 23 years.
Hopefully joining the Porsche ranks this year (2026) with a 996.......I'd love some reading material to increase my knowledge of the inner workings of the Porsche 996?!?!?!
I second that. Not only a fun read but a money and time saver.
For example: Oil Changes
Porsche Shop (local, not dealer)
$298 for 1 qt Liqui-Moly and labor to perform the oil change.
I provided:
8 quarts of Liqui-Moly $130 (including tax)
Filter and Seal replacement (don't remember) ($25?)
Rough Total: $453 + change
With 101 Projects:
Hydraulic Jack ($100- $130)
Jack Stands ($30 - $50) 4 ea. (say $200 tops for 16.5' height)
20 qt Oil Pan ($17 - $20)
Rough Total: $350
The first DIY Oil change will result in roughly a $70 higher cost ($500)
The 2nd change is roughly $150 resulting in a $300 savings (or $230)
The 3rd will have close to the full $300 savings
Now consider the optimum oil change conditions are:
5k or 6 months (whichever comes first) or 2 per year (For low mileage dorks. Porches are made to be driven, not parked. Enjoy the early bore scoring from the oil staved starts with the illusion low mileage will save you from your hubris)
Costs amortized within the first year and roughly $600 saved yearly from that point on.
Enough to buy any additional tool sets that might be needed.
In other words. the price of the book is wildly offset by the savings inherit by following a bare minimum of the information it contains.
