I'm interested in finding a Carrera S or Carrera 4 S cab or coupe in the '07, or '08 years in great shape now that I finally got rid of my M3. I have a few questions for you guys. What factor would swing a person to purchase RWD or AWD? I notice guys say the AWD is wider at the hips, but the specs are the same width and really don't see the difference with side by side photos. Is there much of a difference between the '07-'08 and the '09? Is the '09 a different engine in the '09 or just a bump in power?
This with be a DD and nothing more. A couple years down the road, if I’m still happy with this purchase I’d like to focus on a GT3.
There is a difference in handling, road and steering feel between the AWD and RWD 911models that you need to appreciate by test driving the two types. Obviously if you plan to do a lot of inclement weather driving the AWD version has its well known advantages. The 09 models have brand new engine designs in addition to other cosmetic changes. Additionally PDK was offered for the first time in the 09s as a replacement for the Tiptronic automatic. The HP for the S engine went from 355 to 385 which is not insignificant. The new engine has some design advantages over its predecessor (no intermediate shaft for instance), but it is also a new design that will have it's own issues such has the HPDI fuel pump failures and high oil consumption reported by some owners. Again you need to test drive the two different S models to determine if the 07-08 will meet your needs.
^ +1. Also, when you see the regular Carrera and an S/4S, the difference in hips is very visible. It won't make a difference in DD, but it looks better IMO.
If you are already thinking GT3 then get the Carrera S and get used to Rear While Drive Porsche nuances. If you care about resale and trade in value for your GT3, then get the C4S.
When I was in the market, I test drove both the 2wd and AWD variants. I have to say that the 4S I drove had noticeably better handling when cornering and accelerating. The power/torque differential is also noticeable between the 3.6 and 3.8 liter engines. Not to sound cliché, but the 4S was like driving on rails. It was really nice and I love the 4S. With that said, I ended up buying the 2wd coupe. The pricing was better and I don’t really need the AWD in California. However, if I every relocate to a to an inclement weather state/city (with snow and ice) I will not hesitate to upgrade to a 4S. My main bit of contention will be the decision between PDK or manual transmission.
